I have been working at Memphis Police Department full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great in comparison to other police communications agencies in the area.

    Cons

There is no work/life balance. You have mandatory overtime everyday. They don't care what you have or do not have going on with your family. They just want bodies in a chair to answer the phones. The insurance is very expensive as well. Management doesn't care what happens to you, they look for reasons to suspend you whenever they get a chance even it you haven't done anything so that the city wont be sued.

  3.

never a dull moment serving and protecting the citizens of Memphis.

    Pros

Great experience for any law enforcement professional looking to learn what it takes to be a police officer.

    Cons

The Mayor and City council doesn't support public service professionals and have steadily reduce benifits. This has caused a mass exodus of police and fire leaving for other jobs out of state.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Avoid the Department and City government if all possible.

I have been working at Memphis Police Department full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Big city policing broadens your knowledge experience and sharpens your skills.

    Cons

promotions are slow...average time from patrolman sgt is 16 yrs. expect lots racial bias. Memphis seems to be stuck in the sixties. front line supervisors are lieutenants...creating a "I'm ok you are not ok mentality".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

remember where you started...the best and most respected supervisors lead by example...they themselves should learn what selflessness means.
