    Pros

Decent pay, great place to get training and learn to be the police

    Cons

Way too many to list. You will be backed up by partners but not by brass, city council, or the mayor.

    Advice to Management

    Take better care of officers

  2. Sinking Ship! If you thought the Titanic was a catastrophe MPD makes it look like the SS Minnow!!!

    Pros

Great learning environment provided the supervisors let you do your job.

    Cons

Management is clueless from majority Lt's above. A Colonel is responsible for a Leadership class at inservice and began talking about women and them being Cougars and that "She had been cougarized". Typical of the mindless stumps at the top. The most racist PD I have ever seen and favoritism among blacks is appalling. Law suits against the department at commonplace and they are filed by blacks to promote blacks in the most racially divided City ion the US. The Justice Department should come in and terminate everyone from Colonel and above.

    Advice to Management

    TERMINATE Yourself NOW!

  3. It was great when i started 15 years ago but our present Mayor Wharton and our city counsel has made it horrific

    Pros

Memphis being one of the top ten most dangerous cities in the US provides an officer a LOT of experience.

    Cons

Our Mayor & city counsel cutting our pay 4.6%, raising cost of medical insurance that officers with 25 yrs can't even afford to keep it. taking away pensions and forcing officers into a 401k. they took away college tuition reimbursement and only give $1000 now. MPD is losing 20+ officers a month to other police depts. we are down from 2400 officers to almost 2,000. MPD doesn't support officers. No promotional tests in years. go somewhere else trust me. im leaving soon.

    Advice to Management

treat your officers with respect and appreciation. PROMOTIonal test more often. Get rid of horrible Lt's and Other mngt that do not know how to do their jobs.

    Pros

This employer does offer decent benefits, but they are being reduced by the day. Pay is decent for the area, but we have not received a raise in over six years.

    Cons

No upward mobility, reduction in benefits, often inadequate leadership, and very little support from employer.

    Pros

Job security thanks to the crime rate.

    Cons

Retirement or lack there of. The city council has widdled away at this department so bad that even veteran officers are leaving to start all over somewhere else.

    Advice to Management

    Quit

I have been working at Memphis Police Department full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great in comparison to other police communications agencies in the area.

    Cons

There is no work/life balance. You have mandatory overtime everyday. They don't care what you have or do not have going on with your family. They just want bodies in a chair to answer the phones. The insurance is very expensive as well. Management doesn't care what happens to you, they look for reasons to suspend you whenever they get a chance even it you haven't done anything so that the city wont be sued.

  8. never a dull moment serving and protecting the citizens of Memphis.

    Pros

Great experience for any law enforcement professional looking to learn what it takes to be a police officer.

    Cons

The Mayor and City council doesn't support public service professionals and have steadily reduce benifits. This has caused a mass exodus of police and fire leaving for other jobs out of state.

    Advice to Management

Avoid the Department and City government if all possible.

    Pros

    Good co workers, decent pay

    Cons

All benefits are being stripped, which leaves nothing for retirement! City government does not care.

    Advice to Management

Don't expect your employees to pay for mismanaged funds. Have compassion for those who serve your city.
