Pros
Easy and pretty laid back
Quick advancement if willing to relocate out of state
Looks good on your resume (kinda)
Cons
Must be willing to relocate out of state for advancement. Menards support on relocating is $1.00 raise and will contribute to half a U-Haul, and 3-4 nights in a hotel.
If you have a college degree this program is a joke. You will be underpaid. You will not learn anything. You literally will have to commit to more than 45 hrs a week even if you get promoted all the way up to General Manager.
"Retail Hours" typically 6:30am to 10pm. Every week your schedule will be different.
A majority of the managers and higher-ups have no college education. So it can be sometimes difficult to communicate and you can expect them to make many mistakes.
Raises. ""a joke"" you get a .10 ""cents"" raise every 6 months of employment and you max out at $2.50. (So for example you currently make $11.50hr. and after you have worked for 12.5 years you get $14hr.) (note that doesn't include promotion raises)
Advice to Senior Management
Make the manager trainee program more difficult and challenging. Find a way to encourage your managers to support the manager trainees. Also increase manager trainees pay. We have school loans to pay, and the biggest part don't expect me to stay at Menards when other jobs are willing to pay me "almost" twice as much.
Sad part is a lot of customers are dissatisfied with Menards customer service. Honestly the only reason they go there is they will have the lowest prices and low-cost businesses do really well in a recessions. But Menards uneducated managers "poor management skills" is eventually going to catch up to them.
Pros
store products and loyal customers
Cons
squeeze employees as much as they can
does not reward talent
Advice to Senior Management
treat employees better and push for higher wages
Pros
bonus pay on weekends and holidays and you can normally get time off if you request it far enough in advance
Cons
Incompetent staff, poor benefits, no reason to work harder, poor enforcement of regulations, food that breaks or spoils must be thrown away and cannot be eaten or taken home
Pros
The hours and pay are great for a P/T job either for a college student or supplemental income. It's actually a great job to be social, good excercise, and allows you to work with cool displays/products.
Cons
The F/T role is a joke. What everybody else has posted is true, Menards exclaims that you will make this amount or this amount; which compared to other jobs is somewhat comparable. The huge difference is about 10-15 more hours a week to get there with the nights, weekends, and holidays. It's very depressing when you see everybody come into the store smiling and laughing around the Holiday's when you have to work. My advice is to only take this role if you have no kids and minimal family, i understand you have to do what you got to do but don't get sucked into the Menards trap. I feel sorry for the F/T that have worked their so long and can't get out due to economical contrainsts. Yes John/Larry Menard the employees chose to work their, but that doesn't mean you don't have to have Corporate Social Responsibility and treat employees like it's a military.
Advice to Senior Management
"The best employees are the happiest employees"
Allow P/T positions to manage.
Pros
Easy to get a job with Menards in recession.
Cons
Cutthroat, will move you anywhere at the drop of a hat. Will get rid of anyone no matter how long they have been there.
Pros
Can make some money if you work 55-60 hours a week, because of overtime pay.
Cons
Store and upper management is a joke. Its all who you know and who you suck up to.
Best thing that ever happened was being let go after ONE, yes ONE customer complaint after 10 years of service.
Advice to Senior Management
Get some educated store managers. To many do not have a college education and just get promoted because of who they know.
Pros
Every other weekend off, open 1-2 days a week and get off early, easy work, otherwise nothing good at this place.
Cons
You have to learn hundreds of policies and procedures, half of which are not even followed. If you are a college graduate look elsewhere. Getting paid to sweep floors with a bachelors degree is not what I planned.
ZERO work-life balance. When you work the weekends a typical schedule would be 10am-10pm Friday, 10-10pm Saturday, 8-8pm Sunday.
Advice to Senior Management
This company is going to be driven into the ground soon, stop making all these stupid policies and procedures lol
Pros
outside all day long its great
Cons
managers are 20-25 yrs old with no college aka they are not qualified to figure out what the hell is going on and they get paid 11 $ a hour
Advice to Senior Management
awful read above comment
Pros
It isnt that hard to get promoted within your current store or to one that is still fairly close. They have enough store close together for that.
Cons
The upper managent at each store has to hound their dept managers because of the higher ups at the general office. They dont care about the well being of the employees, they just want to get sales. If a store isnt making its projections, it is of course the dept managers fault. No reseach is done to figure out the real reason.
Advice to Senior Management
When I first started working for the company in 1994, they actually cared about their employees. I cant really pin point when, but this changed because they wanted to get even more money for them selves. Show your employees you care and stop trying to come up with new fines all the time so your managers will not get any bonuses.
Pros
A regular paycheck, $2.50 extra on the weekend
Cons
Horrible managment, the company doesn't care about you, you are a number, 10 cent raises, the people such to work with, focused to much on the bottom line, the procedures are horrible
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of the clothing and all the rebates, get better managment
