If you come across a bad team of managers your life may become a living hell and you may be harassed with no one to report to because the company is still owned by john menard and a few other people who run the company and will take the side of UPPER management because of time with the company over whats fair and right

    Pros

You get to help a lot of different kinds of people.

    Cons

Management is not good. Really long hours on weekends. You feel like you only really live about half a year every year and you wake up wondering where the last 5 years went.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people with respect and stop promoting people solely based on them being a good butt kisser.

    Pros

The guests (aka: customers) are typically great. The fellow teammates are also fun to work with.

    Cons

There seems to be a "fly by the seat of your pants" approch from the corporate headquarters. They use archaic methods in retail that seems to be holding them back from growing further.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Packing up Christmas merchandise year after year is ridiculous. The fact we have to hang onto Christmas napkins because you refuse to mark them down past 50% wastes retail space.

    I worked at Menards

    Pros

The pay was good. Most of my money was made by working overtime or in end of year bonuses. I traveled to stores all over the country and flew there on private company jets. The company had an unlimited budget for training and development. Strong culture. This is a great company to start out at. If you want to move up quickly in an organization, this is the place.

    Cons

If you are able to completely commit your life to the company, you'll do great. Don't expect a life outside of work. 55-65 hours/week. No PTO. No sick time. 5 vacation days/year for the first 4 years. I had to use vacation days when I had pneumonia. Burnout came quickly. The company has so much potential but with an outdated culture of "all work and no play," I just couldn't make it work for me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a culture that allows your people to have a work-life balance. If you don't, they'll find a company who will.

I worked at Menards full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

You can use the money you're earning hourly to buy things with your name tag.
You do receive a decent health insurance plan.

    Cons

Very unsafe to work. You are forced to do tasks without the proper safety equipment. If you ask for help from another employee management scolds you for using up spare employees. Gays and women are discriminated against by other employees with demeaning remarks. Female employees are sexually harassed daily by the male employees with constant sexual innuendos, remarks in regards to their bodies and proposals by male employees for sexual intercourse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Investigate the constant sexual harassment towards female employees. Investigate the discriminating remarks made by the male employees towards women and gays. Understand that proper help and equipment must be used to complete certain tasks throughout the day.

I worked at Menards part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay on weekend days is an extra 2.50 an hour which is great and if you are full-time benefits are not too horrible.

    Cons

Management is made up of a bunch of high school drop outs or people with bachelor's degrees who are too lazy to look for worthwhile jobs. They are usually always irritated or annoyed because corporate is always switching policies on them, auditing them, and other general nonsense. Work-to-life balance is non-existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Teach management how to properly interact with employees
