I have been working at Mendes & Mount full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Colleagues are professional and fun to be around. Great offices in midtown Manhattan and reasonable hours. Opportunities to work directly with clients almost immediately. Supervisors do a good job of increasing workload as associates grow in experience.

    Cons

In addition to substantive work you are asked to assist with billing matters, which can be challenging for new associates. Most of your time is spent in the office, but there are opportunities for travel after you have been with the firm for a couple years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mentor programs might benefit new associates.

I worked at Mendes & Mount

    Pros

It's better than being unemployed and homeless (probably). The office is physically nice, although it's largely empty since half the office left the firm to form their own in mid-2010.

    Cons

Micromanagement but with an absentee manager; constant second-guessing and back-stabbing by management; poor treatment of employees with favoritism toward some; constant turnover; subtle and overt pressure to cut reported billable time, so that employees, not management, gets blame for poor collections; failure to bill clients on time; very poor IT system, circa 1992 probably; sense of fear in the office - will I be around after this Friday, or today?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Close the office, after giving the innocent employees enough time to find new jobs.

Middle of the road insurance law firm.

I have been working at Mendes & Mount

    Pros

The hours aren't too long compared to larger law firms. Business casual dress is allowed most days. It is located near several subway lines.

    Cons

The cost of healthcare increases a lot each year, and the amount covered by the insurance decreases a lot each year. There is little chance of making Equity Partner. Bonuses are $5,000 for the first 50 hours billed above the minimum billable requirement, but only increase $2,500 for every 50 hours billed above that amount. Management and partners are not concerned with associate's concerns and issues. No formal training program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Associates should be asked to give anonymous reviews of partners, as the only reviews are top-down currently. Also, bonuses should be awarded at the rate of $5,000 for every 50 hours billed over the minimum. Stop making us pay more for healthcare.
