    Pros

The upper management has successfully grown the company in a big way, while creating a fun and very challenging environment. The demands are high but the rewards are just as high.

    Cons

Such a dynamic environment can be stressful - things don't always go as planned.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maintain the culture. It is your greatest asset.

I have been working at Mentor Graphics

    Pros

Interesting areas to work on and flexible working hours. They focus on the quality of work being delivered and creativity in solving problems. Generally they don't promote 9 to 5 culture and are very supportive. You get to work with brilliant people who appreciate hard work.

    Cons

You will quite often find yourself in a situation where you have to deal with office politics and you'll be able to watch fights. Sometimes managers and/or seniors don't like each other so they bully the juniors to try to make the other manager's life hell. In my three years with the company, I've witnessed it all.

In some parts, they have put in ridiculous number of layers of management. While few managers are really good, most of them hardly do the job they are supposed to do or they are not appropriate for the position they are in, which has knock on effects when it comes to dealing with the problems inherent with that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize, compensate, and reward your hard workers and don't use the company policies as a framework to cover your incompetence.

The promotions are hard to come and the san jose location is not the head quarters.

    Pros

Entrepreneurial spirit thrives in this company. If you have a good idea let it be known and reap the rewards.
Beautiful headquarters campus, leading edge tools and systems. Excellent vacation/personal time benefits. Freedom to work at home several days per week.

    Cons

The company has grown and as sales top $1 billion the perks are drying up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The emphasis is on results, not 9 to 5, so if you can get you job done, you are afforded a lot of flexibility. Management is generally fair and allows you to find your own path to getting results. There is lots of space for creativity and defining your own goals. Compensation is good and perks like dining with customers or traveling to conferences are common.

    Cons

The nature of the work is that you are an individual contributor, sometimes I miss being part of a larger team. Opportunities for promotion are few in the application engineering side of the organization, but if you don't want to be a manager, then that's not too much of a problem. Sometimes it can be quite political.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management focuses on building team spirit through group get-togethers and team activities. It would be good to add building strong technical teamwork to that. It is rewarding to work on a team where you feel that you and your colleagues can support each other to solve problems and provide value.

Clearly articulated company strategy along with frank and open communication. Great outdoor sports - skiing, cycling, fishing, etc.

At Mentor Graphics one establishes great connections within the company between peers and management. People are approachable and there is a family like atmosphere. Many employees enjoy Mentor's culture and plan to stay with the company the duration of their work lives. Most employees truly enjoy their jobs and those they interface with on a daily basis. A can do attitude is normal operating practice. Employees have a real sense of pride working for Mentor it becomes a part of your identity. The benefits are excellent. At corporate and the Fremont site, exercise programs are available to employees. I truly enjoyed my time at Mentor and miss all those I worked with for many years.
