I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good company culture
Senior management is accessible and employee focused, where practical
Opportunities exist, especially in corporate headquarters in Wilsonville, OR
Strong ethical base throughout the company
Company's business direction is headed in a positive direction

    Cons

Politics can exist in pockets, but this is not unlike most companies.
Some individuals in sales organization sometimes act "entitled"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay the course. Overall, the upper management is very well appreciated by the employee base.

    Strong executive leaders, great culture

    Pros

The executive leadership at Mentor Graphics is very strong. The CEO and President are always looking for ways to innovate the company's products, hire the best talent, and manage the company ethically. Many opportunities to be in different positions or work with leading edge technology. Very flexible work hours and a lot of autonomy given to employees to create their own day based on goals.

    Cons

Many of the divisions in the company are acquisitions, so the management culture within them can vary greatly. However, MG has a great training team and they do their best to instill best practices and create strong managers.

I worked at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Everyone is very friendly and willing to help. The policy for time off is called Flexible Time Off. You get unlimited time off, but if you request more than 3 weeks at a time it requires approval from your manager's manager. All other time off just requires your manager's approval, and all of the managers I've interacted with have been very understanding and down to earth. They use the Agile method for project planning and it works very well. There are a lot of meetings because of it, but the meetings are casual and relaxed.

    Cons

The software is 30 years old, so many of the teams just fix defects in our branch. If you want to work on something new and expanding then Mentor is not the place for you. Office politics also play a decently big role. I was hired after being an intern. There were definitely other interns who were more capable than me who didn't get offered positions because they didn't get along as well with the managers and other employees. You need to be able to have friendly chats and be outgoing, but if you have that then you'll have a great time here.

I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

time-off policy is controversial. Leadership quality depends on the group. Decent benefits. Decent pay. Cares a lot about employees (provides training courses, after work socialization events, work out facilities). But from what I hear, we used to be a lot more caring 20+ years ago.

    Cons

Groups seemingly work against each other rather than with each other.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leverage off the strengths of other groups.

I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Time off quota is excellent at 24 days/year. Top management are smart and sincerely caring. Career-wise with option of engineering track only.

    Cons

Lower management has politics. And given the technical nature of each's responsibilities, top/upper management is unable to look at all the details/histories, and accountability of lower management and engineers ceases to exists.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Finding knowledgeable and good lieutnants is hard.

I worked at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Flexible working hours, nice co-workers and an easygoing atmosphere.

    Cons

Really bad self-righteous middle-management looking to make a name for themselves, lack of direction and not a lot of possibility for self-advancement i.e. challenging projects with new technologies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read Peopleware. Seriously, read it. Software engineers are not mindless drones that you should micromanage - not because you should be nice to your employees, but rather to get the most out of them. You are investing your money by hiring them.

I worked at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good management and product mix. Established player in EDA field. Stable company and decent culture. Strong products and loyal customers. Good sales force and sales methodology.

    Cons

EDA is a mature industry. Not really fast growing compared to other areas, like internet cloud. Some past tensions and culture clashes between acquired companies and products vs. original Mentorites. But most have been assimilated.
