    Pros

The upper management has successfully grown the company in a big way, while creating a fun and very challenging environment. The demands are high but the rewards are just as high.

    Cons

Such a dynamic environment can be stressful - things don't always go as planned.

    Advice to Management

Maintain the culture. It is your greatest asset.

    Pros

Great groups of people to work with and relatively stable environment. Mid-managers value opinions, but be prepared to spend a lot of over-time if you want to pursue challenging projects to demostrate growth.

    Cons

There is little opportunity for advancement and kudos are given to individuals that are adept at "peacocking" their achievements. Positions that do become available are often filled without being legitimately open for recruitment. This promotes an environment of an "old boys" club as hiring and promotion practices are not transparent and based on obscure criteria.

    Pros

Work life balance, on-site amenities, people

    Cons

Lack of formal leadership / management. Company tends to manage the financials vs. people

    Advice to Management

Put more resources towards training management on "mentor"ing employees. People are most often motivated by fear vs accolades

    Pros

Provides lot of opportunities to perform different jobs. Also the company has a great vacation package.

    Cons

The promotions are hard to come and the san jose location is not the head quarters.

    Advice to Management

    Be aggresive

    Pros

Entrepreneurial spirit thrives in this company. If you have a good idea let it be known and reap the rewards.
Beautiful headquarters campus, leading edge tools and systems. Excellent vacation/personal time benefits. Freedom to work at home several days per week.

    Cons

The company has grown and as sales top $1 billion the perks are drying up.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what your doing !

    Pros

The emphasis is on results, not 9 to 5, so if you can get you job done, you are afforded a lot of flexibility. Management is generally fair and allows you to find your own path to getting results. There is lots of space for creativity and defining your own goals. Compensation is good and perks like dining with customers or traveling to conferences are common.

    Cons

The nature of the work is that you are an individual contributor, sometimes I miss being part of a larger team. Opportunities for promotion are few in the application engineering side of the organization, but if you don't want to be a manager, then that's not too much of a problem. Sometimes it can be quite political.

    Advice to Management

Management focuses on building team spirit through group get-togethers and team activities. It would be good to add building strong technical teamwork to that. It is rewarding to work on a team where you feel that you and your colleagues can support each other to solve problems and provide value.

    Pros

Mentor has so many friendly people, right up to the top. Another thing that impresses me is how virtually everyone is a self starter, has great work ethics, and is a pleasure to work with. Bonuses are nice.

    Cons

There is no advancement possibility at Mentor. Management makes no effort to change this, despite it being the number one "con" in the last employee survey.

The treatment of employees has been on a steady decline for about five years. Raises are tiny...average was 2.5% this year despite the company having a banner year.

Performance reviews seem to have no correlation whatsoever with performance. Very de-motivational...why work harder when everyone gets the same?

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees like you did in the past! The economy is changing and the management mantra "you should be happy to have a job" is no longer valid. Recognize, compensate, and reward your hard workers if you want to continue staying competitive.

    Pros

    Good work environment and campus.

    Cons

Not many perks and pay is not competitive.

    Advice to Management

There are employees that work harder and produce more results than the rest of the group. Please pay these high acheivers more than those that are NOT producing as much. There are a lot of "dead wood" among employees at this company.

    Pros

This company is lead by an amazing CEO that knows every detail of the business and can talk technical to any crowd. The headquarters in Wilsonville OR is an amazing campus in a nice little town south of Portland. The benefits are on par with most high tech companies. They just switched to unlimited vacation. The company has been profitable for many years. The strategy is to only go after markets that they can be number 1 in or number 2 and growing.

    Cons

The biggest problems in EDA and Mentor are:
     - Deep discounting. For some reason, Mentor and the leading EDA companies are now in a space where customers do not want to pay for software. Ironically, you cannot design electronics today without these tools. We see 95-99% discounts on big deals. While that can bring in a fat paycheck to the top level of the company, the trickle-down affect to the divisions is that many do not reap any money from the sale. Thus, they miss their targets.
    - Each division is run as a separate business with a P and L. This means that there is very little cooperation between product divisions in a lot of cases. It also can cause the "have" and the "have not" divisions. The haves get rewarded and the have not's struggle. Make sure you know what division is a "have" before taking a job here.

    Advice to Management

Appoint "vision" or initiative czars at the top of the company to drive solutions that include all the divisions that need to participate. For example, if the company wants to go after automotive, that encompasses many products in many divisions. Because the businesses are silos, they will never deliver a unified solution without a top level driver.

    Pros

Brilliant people accomplishing significant breakthroughs with no politics; highly ethical. Provides an opportunity to work with customers and employees located all over the world. Clearly articulated company strategy along with frank and open communication. Great outdoor sports - skiing, cycling, fishing, etc.

    Cons

Winters are long, cloudy and rainy (but it rarely snows). Not yet number one in its industry (but continues to gain).

    Advice to Management

Like the way management and employees mix together and communicate openly.
