I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Personally, I have had a wonderful experience at Mentor. Working hard and making the right contacts have resulted in job advancement and opportunity (although I hear from others that not everyone is given that opportunity). The campus is beautiful, the benefits are great, and the compensation is good if you make sure to ask for what you are worth. For a person with a family, the work life balance and onsite childcare are absolutely stellar.

    Cons

It seems from time to time that Mentor is more about security for employees then pressing everyone to perform. It is frustrating to work besides people who are just comfortable and collecting a paycheck - but as long as you can be personally accountable and self satisfied that can be looked past.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider investing in new employees for new thoughts and ideas. I hate to say it but if you look closely at your ranks there are a number of people who could probably benefit from being shaken up a bit.

I worked at Mentor Graphics full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Of course this depends on your manager and work team but overall I felt Mentor's work environment was great on product development side. It had just the right amount of stress level to keep things interesting and not too much to be overwhelming. I worked with some great coworkers who were committed to delivering quality products and we worked well in an agile environment.
Pay was fair to good, but had been really lean to non-existent in the last 4-5 years. There is convenient access to top-rated Child Development Center if your kids are young. Great access to the Gym, weight room, classes like yoga, pilates, strength training, etc.

    Cons

Not a well-defined growth path for QA.

I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    - offices (rather than cubes)
    - the work environment is not at all stressful.
    - Decent benefits (although it is likely better in other tech companies)

    Cons

    -no career growth path
    - salaries are stagnant and bonuses non-existent
    - diminishing benefits (such as time off has been slashed to 2 weeks accrual NOT 24 days as advertised).
    - No encouragement for fresh ideas

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Encourage new ideas for business and streamlined processes.
    - Hold the management (including yourselves) accountable when business isn't good.

    Pros

    good pay for Mobile area

    Cons

too many to list. New GM is a hachet man, has run off most of the folks that built the division. Ones he brought in have left. Too late getting into Linux and Android, ignored the customer base that built the company, best people leaving in droves. Haven't hit sales quota in forever. Only Mentor's stupidity to keep pumping cash into this failed endeavor keeps the doors open. You'd find better morale in Hell.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change for the sake of change was stupid. I guess you know that now.

First 15+ years were great but then Mentor "matured" and the business types took over.

    I worked at Mentor Graphics

    Pros

The people I worked with cared and kept things going despite screwy decision making by CIO and division GMs
    Facilities were very nice.
    The work was interesting
You could make a difference for the people you were doing the work for
    Compensation was good.

    Cons

You had to build your own niche.
    Career path was undefined.
You were at the whim of managers a continent or more away who didn't know you or the tasks you performed
Slowly eroding the benefits in the name of "economy"
Non-profit center support personel were never clearly advised how their contribution was compared with the profit center personel.
    Had a project d'jour mentality.
HR was a joke. All they did was tend the revolving door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A software company is nothing but the people. By firing the older people you destroy the corporate memory and expertise and reduce the effectiveness of all the employees. The CIO needs to do some 'management by walking around' and find out who the people are and what they bring to the corporation,....besides a way for him to play with the latest 'toys' and build up some more 'accomplishments' for his next position. Wouldn't hurt for the CEO to do the same and have the CIO explain the function of the various groups in his domain.
