I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Nice environment, campus, offices. Reasonably stable.

    Cons

Getting to be just about the money. Losing sight of a balance between customers, shareholders and employees. Lately it's been all about the shareholders. When this balance gets out of whack, your company becomes, well, unbalanced. Ok for the very short term, but a smoothly functioning company looking out for the long term benefit of *al*l would be more prudent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Forget Carl, concentrating on quality product, satisfying customers and keeping your employees happy will take care of the stockholders automatically. Quit looking for the next 2% you can squeeze from somewhere. Greed will kill the golden goose.

    Pros

Overall Mentor was a great place to work. I was fortunate to have a good work/life balance and appreciated the quality of the compensation and benefits programs. Not too many companies in Oregon can offer the campus environment either (baseball field, soccer field, outdoor volleyball court, indoor basketball court, weight room, locker rooms, cafeteria, etc.)

    Cons

Unfortunately, there was limited career opportunity which forced me to look for employment opportunities elsewhere.

Former Employee - Engineer in San Jose, CA

I worked at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Mostly a solid company with good products, good benefits, support for the community.

    Cons

Some arrogance toward the customer, and some arrogance toward other employees from the lead developers in successful groups.
Very little coordination of products between divisions. Very little core skills in marketing.
The "country club" rumors are somewhat true, in that some employees are allowed to "cruise", doing very little.
A poor manager can screw over any employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Coordinate the activities to get a better overall result.
Promote an environment of respect for all employees.
Empower HR to teach managers how to lead, motivate, review, and develop their employees.

I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

-Lots of good people in the company, but it will depend on the team.
-Very flexible work environment. Culture is very relaxed and no one is counting the clock....you're just entrusted to get your job done.

    Cons

-Not a lot of new blood which means not many new ideas. People stick around for a long time at Mentor....you need a balance of new folks with fresh thoughts and people that have been around while.
-No career growth paths that I've seen anywhere. People get a job and there is no advancement. Can be very frustrating if you're ambitious.
-Everything is silo'd into divisions with really no communication across divisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide opportunities for employees to explore career paths outside of their current role. Encourage collaboration between the different product lines and divisions. People want to create amazing/great products and sell them. There is talent in Mentor....enable it!
