I have been working at Mercer full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I love working for Mercer. The people are for the most part fantastic, and most of them strive to succeed and hold themselves and other to high standards.

    Cons

Some of my coworkers don't care about their jobs at all and complain about working (even though they are getting paid for overtime), yet have been rewarded in all the same ways as those who do not take such a lazy approach. Does not seem fair, and thus removes some incentive to perform well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bonuses are lackluster when the company does poorly, but other employees get guaranteed overtime. Consider a change.

I have been working at Mercer full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexibility is good but must work weekends and evenings to stay ahead.

    Cons

So many changes that it's impossible to even keep up any longer. Don't seem valued as an employee; just an employee number. Low morale. Used to be a wonderful place to work where everyone seemed valued and actually enjoyed their jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Engage your employees and make them feel important to the success of the firm.

I worked at Mercer full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

-Great pay... You can negotiate what it will take to hire you...
    -Very good benefits...
-Lots of time off... close the office 1/2 day before the holiday for example
-Work remote or from on of the other offices around the country

    Cons

-Most employees are in it for themselves... You need to have a huge ego to survive or enjoy being very self centered
    -There is ZERO training, honest!!
-Very poor LOB leadership... How some of these folks make it to a leadership role is amazing... stunning actually...
-Leadership does not believe in the performance review process... you put your plan in place, have it signed off by your manager and then witness them never reviewing and using it as planned... Amazing exercise in wasting time
-Expect a RIF (reduction in force) 2-3 times per year

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the facade of wanting to be a sales organization... It will never happen...

I worked at Mercer full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

No grunt work here. Gain valuable training and experience with top tier clients from day one.

    Cons

As with most consulting firms, expect to put in lots of hours and get little reward - especially for those off the actuarial track.

I have been working at Mercer

    Pros

Descent benefits. The work life balance has gotten better

    Cons

Some smart people but also some real morons. No clear cut criteria for promotion/advancement, at least there is a criteria, but it is not followed at all. Double standards are rampant in this company and for some reason they reward failure by promoting those people up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The stock of this company has done absolutely nothing; therefore as your reward you should share in the "inflation" salary increase that you bestowed on all of your employees and you should be stripped of your bonus and redistribute that money to the people that actually bring in revenue to the company.

I have been working at Mercer

    Pros

Interesting and challenging client work and talented colleagues. Could be an even greater place if not attached to a public traded parent company (MMC). Clients are high-quality, brand names, but client work itself is often not as interesting as it could be due to lower buying level.

    Cons

Increasing burden around administrative tasks and less personal development opportunities given cost control pressures. Quarterly performance targets drive behaviors counter to long-term growth of the firm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

minimize admin burden and process BS.

    I worked at Mercer

    Pros

You learn something new every day. Consultants and analysts are in the same area to allow for easy interacting amongst the employees.

    Cons

-Senior consultants and analysts are too separated. Seems to be a disconnect between the two in terms of leadership, compensation, and communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire from within. Give analysts more responsibility. Communication is key to having your good employees stay with the company. Excellent employees can be easily snatched by competitors.

Current Employee - Senior Associate in Atlanta, GA

I have been working at Mercer

    Pros

    name brand recognition
generally good work life balance - but travel can be an issue for some
easy to learn about a wide range of subjects

    Cons

    very weak senior team
not a thought leader - more of a thought reproducer
no talent development - senior professionals focused on own careers and don't get rewarded for focusing on people
    outdated technology
extremely redundant and tedious work at all levels
manager research is a dead end and the leaders of the group from Europe are out of touch and uninspiring
consultancy lacks innovation and generally just overwhelms clients with information not thought leadership

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

money is wasted on needing a massive analyst pool to peer review and double check and recheck all work, improved and updated technology could reduce cost and improve performance.
