    Great company to start career.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsMerchandise Mart Properties hires great people who are friendly and enjoyable to work with. The flexible summer hours, employee benefit programs and office culture make it a great place to work.

Conslack of room for advancement, low salaries, lack of organizational visibility and large layoffs because of a change from showroom management to more of a traditional office building structure.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed additional training opportunities for employees and salaries are not industry standard.

    – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

ProsYou don't see companies offering the vacation, personal, sick day or health benefits like this company does.

ConsThe company was experiencing constant downsizing.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Used to be a good company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsAttainable goals. Good exposure to higher level work, since upper management depends on lower level staff to interpret results for them. Good work life balance and summer hours

ConsStill has shirt and tie dress requirements. Company is on major decline and poorly ran company. Unqualified senior management. Major reduction in forces have totally demoralized the remaining employees.

Advice to Senior Management2 percent annual raises are not going to retain your best employees.

Work is largely spent sorting through the bureaucracy and menial office tasks.

Human Resources (Former Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsLow-threshold for doing well allows individuals to progress and receive positive reviews. This makes for a good job with someone pursuing something outside of work such as a music or acting career in which they need a continual paycheck. MMPI has short hours.

ConsThe firms is largely guided by the upper level management who control the intellectual and then export the rest of it to the lower level management. Overall a very polarized atmosphere that, I believe, bred animosity between the two parties.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would advise cutting down on staff to become more efficient. The corporate structure is bloated and lackluster in talent pools.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsExposure to high end customers in many industries
MMPI held in high esteem among peers
Chris Kennedy takes great care of his people with outstanding benefits package

ConsIf you live in the burbs, the commute is brutal.
No working from home at all.
Chris Kennedy is brilliant, his senior staff is not the A team.

Advice to Senior ManagementChris, get rid of the dead wood on your Sr Staff.

    Merchandise Mart properties

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsMatching 401k, good health insurance and decent vacation. Merchandise Mart Properties is widely recognized as a name brand which helps when looking for a new job.

ConsManagement is not competent in many cases. Politics play a huge role in who is hired and promoted. Promotions are not based on merit and salaries are generally very low if not an executive.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers should be competent and lead by example instead of relying on their subordinates to do their work for them.

    no opportunity for growth

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Toronto, ON (Canada)

Pros-very casual and relaxed environment, no dress code is required
-senior management is very approachable and an open door policy is put in place

Consgrowth opportunity is limited and compensation is not tied to performance, starting salary is ok but the increase is very minimum even when the job description and title have changed
complete lack of communication on company development and key issues.
there is overall dissatisfaction among employees, only upper management is evaluated, there is no performance review and feedback.

    Team Environment with Difficult Leadership

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsMMPI offers great co-workers and a strong benefit package. It's a great place to start a career and to grow in knowledge.

ConsManagement can be difficult and can work against the solutions presented by the greater teams. Change to process and thinking comes slowly and work volume is impossibly high.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow employees more control in decision making and listen to their thoughts. Understand that volume sacrifices quality and morale and do the best to combat that issue.
