Former Employee - Medical Representative in London, England (UK)

I worked at Merck full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Well looked after. A very warm friendly culture. Compensation and benefits are good. Management decisions seem sound and in touch with the needs of the business. Keep your head down and you can find yourself on a good salary very quickly.

    Cons

Maybe a little to warm and comfortable for those looking for a fast paced career. Career progression opportunities are very limited. Getting into head office roles from the field is tough. Support for further qualifications is seemingly non existent (MBA etc).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe a graduate fast track type programme is needed to attract and retain high calibre graduates.

Current Employee - Pharmaceutical Sales Representative in London, England (UK)

I have been working at Merck full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good company package. Health insurance, maternity package, good car options for field representatives and option to include dental and life insurance coverage for family at a small monthly cost

    Cons

Too many "brown-nosers" getting ahead. Too much internal politics. I guess most sales environments are like that. Hard work should be adequately compensated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There should be some improvement in middle management people skills

    I worked at Merck

    Pros

Fun place to work, good salary and good car scheme

    Cons

No hope of promotion, managers brought in from outside. Employees treated like mushrooms - kept in the dark and fed sh*t.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be much more transparent, listen to the employees more about where they want to progress to in their careers.

Former Employee - Product Manager in Hoddesdon, East of England, England (UK)

    I worked at Merck

    Pros

Salary is not that bad. The corporate office (based in the States) is very forward looking and appears to be professionally managed.

    Cons

However, the UK affiliate and its senior management was a disaster (till end of 2009). I hear that the new management is slightly better. But some of the old rotten apples are still hanging on in the leadership team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some of the inefficient management team members to start doing some real work. This particularly applies to the marketing and sales guys.

    Pros

good location. final salary pension like in the NHS< but may go now after the merger/ take over.

    Cons

hypocritical senior management. poor work life balance. not a great salary and culture. poor bonuses compared to USA and no stock options.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think it is difficult as the senior management is likely to change after the merger with Merck. Listen lore.

Mismatch between public face and private culture

Former Employee - Executive in London, England (UK)

    I worked at Merck

    Pros

Broad-based pharmaceutical company with opportunities in multiple professional and geographic areas. The range of the company - including human and animal health, prescription and OTC pharma, research as well as sales - provides good scope for lateral moves. The company is well represented in most countries, however expatriate assignments are not fostered.

    Cons

Very significant disconnect between values espoused in public and the business culture actually in place. The company and Fred Hassan present a very attractive philosophy and vision, however in reality the company is very aggressive commercially with a lot of cynical attitudes among staff who must act in ways that are not reflected in the espoused culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through with the espoused values.
