    The Good Times Are Gone

    Manufacturing (Former Employee) Chelmsford, MA

ProsGood people in Non-Management position where team work is essential. Company flex hours are great. Benefits are good but falling behind other companies.

ConsSenior Management can care less about laying off people. Job security is non-existent as one never knows when one will be let go.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop acquiring companies and give raises, plus stop saying you are lucky to have a job!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

If only it could have lasted

Engineering Co-Op (Former Employee) Chelmsford, MA

ProsFantastic group of people; Intelligent and friendly
A lot of potential and the learning never ends
    Good growth opportunities
    Competitive pay with good benefits

ConsDefense industry and defense budget issues almost dictate hiring and keeping of hardworking employees.
Plays things a little to conservative.
    A little chaotic at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize the talent beneath you. Ensure the employees are truly happy especially with all the additional hard work everyone has to put in to ensure deadlines are met and problems solved while being understaffed.

    Used to be decent......

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Chelmsford, MA

ProsIt's a job. Even with a possibility of using debt, it pushes to use cash resources

ConsWith the recent acquisitions and corresponding layoffs, Mercury has sunk from a positive company where the $'s came in easily, to breaking policy to chase $'s. The management direction is haphazard - nothing clear since the acquisitions and layoffs. The attitude is depressing at HQ. They are blaming it on the continuing resolution

Advice to Senior ManagementFix the current problems. THE BOD should re-evaluate the current management. Maybe they were great with a smaller company and has bitten off more than they can chew.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Bleeding Talented People

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Chelmsford, MA

ProsMost of the people I worked with were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and interesting.

ConsThe upper management is terrible. In their strive to be cost-effective, they have laid off or driven away a good deal of talent. Constant pay and hiring freezes keep what talent is left overworked and underpaid. All engineers are spread far too thin.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees better. Stop focusing on making the company worth more on paper and actually develop a deeper talent pool.

    10 years business development

    Director (Current Employee) Chelmsford, MA

ProsMercury had a technology leadership in the embedded computer space. Their leading switch fabric architecture made anyone who needed a super computer in a shoe box come to Mercury.

ConsThe leadership mentality between the executive and senior staff was much like throwing meat on the floor and watching the resulting melee. The senior staff acknowledged the onslaught of commoditization, but refused to change course to adapt.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is a new management team in place as a result of the above comment. So far profitability is being made via personnel cuts, not innovation.

MCS is characterized by good products, great technology, and a collaborative envirionment which I liked.

    Manager (Current Employee) Marlborough, MA

Pros+good technical staff, if a little over worked.
    +competitive salaries and benefits
    +strong CEO
+company may be poised for solid growth
+ strong work ethic of most associates

Cons- some inconsistency in senior management ranks
    - workload levelling is not a core skill
    -

Advice to Senior ManagementFIgure out how to sell services that can be delivered. Build a strong BD staff with in-depth knowledge of MCS core strength and how to leverage it w/o being body shop to the primes. Take a close look at that period in MCS past when you had great subject matter expertise (like Einstein, Green, Rudin, etc) and see if the ROI was really as dramatic as some folks thought it was.
