I have been working at Meredith Corporation full-time

    Pros

-Quality of life. I work late during peak RFP times, but other than that I can leave at 5-5:30pm each night.
    -Pleasant work environment

    Cons

-Salary/raises are limited to the upper echelons.
    -Print and digital aren't integrated
    -Departments keep getting downsized...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acquiring new companies is great for the company overall, but what about the existing employees? We often find out about these after the trades write about it. I know a lot of employees are frustrated with this as we've gotten abysmal raises over the years.

    Pros

Talented, kind people. Upper management seems to care about employees' well being. Holds an annual Town Hall meeting, complete with unscripted Q&A with CEO, in attempt at transparency. Very generous summer hours.

    Cons

Seemingly annual layoffs. Excessively frugal. Budgets are way too low. Absolutely no separation between church and state. Getting ads trumps ethics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more respect for the editorial process and what is required of a staff to create content. Consider more telecommuting policies. Make salaries more competitive.

    Pros

I worked at Meredith for several years and enjoyed the atmosphere, management, and opportunity for advancement.

    Cons

The investment in editorial product is as minimal as possible, tough to reach into management ranks, bit of an old boys club.

    Pros

    Great benefits and Wellness program.

    Cons

A lot of middle management has no idea what they are doing and are very pompous and rightous. All-for-one mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no growth for entry-level positions. Great company but no upward mobility unless you are a Director or Publisher.

I worked at Meredith Corporation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

This is a company with great senior leadership with a dynamic CEO. There is a highly balanced work life attitude, typical benefits and its best asset is that it attracts generally nice people that are wiling to help each other, which is a unique characteristic in the magazine industry. They care for the health and well being for employees and provide benefits that drive that sentiment. It is highly structured and provides good lines of communication between management and employees.

    Cons

There is little opportunity for advancement and no apparent plan for fostering growth for talented employees. HR is a weak link and seems shackled by its leadership. Mass layoffs are frequent and tend to impact the publishing group. The digital division is underfunded and reactive to market trends rather than leading the trends. Salaries are lower compared to similar companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rather than laying people off, consider training and transitioning traditional publishing staff to digital media jobs. Improve salaries, promote from within.

I worked at Meredith Corporation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I worked with some of my favorite people in the business and looked forward to going work everyday. It was really all about the people.

    Cons

After multiple rounds of shocking layoffs, the morale is low. It also remains a bit stagnant since print isn't integrating fast enough with digital. There is limited growth and learning potential since most middle management positions have been removed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to find new ways to motivate staff and promote growth and learning to keep top talent.

I worked at Meredith Corporation full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Meredith is an extremely smart company. They know how to function in a cost effective manner, unlike Time Inc (which is probably why they are on the decline). The are extremely organized and are fair .

    Cons

The pay here is not great, but I would always pick having a happy life over one with more money. They have tons of parenting titles yet they do not provide women any benefits when going on maternity leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you are doing.

I worked at Meredith Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The work hours are fair and many of the people I worked with were nice people. Also good benefits.

    Cons

The magazine business is shrinking and the upper management always seems insulated from the layoffs even though just one of their salaries would save probably 5 jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop firing sales people. They make the company money. Start looking in the mirror and seeing that some of you need to go.

I worked at Meredith Corporation part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Happy hours, pretty close to Grand Central. Most everyone is easy going and nice. The renovated office space is modern and spacious.

    Cons

Digital Marketing is old school and leadership in this department is very nice. If you're not willing to play the game, don't bother coming here. Hourly pay isn't on par with what the industry pays.
