I worked at Meritor as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Reasonable environment, good people, not a bad place to work on the whole. Good facilities for the most part. Needs some updating though.

    Cons

Ingrained culture, not really open to ideas for new opportunities in markets. Business infrastructure need modernized and streamlining. Management need to make better use of available data.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Expand your business to include more systems. The investment is minimal and the value to your customers is substantial. For example: Steer axles... offer more than just the axle, offer the full steering system, integrated into the customer's vehicle.

I have been working at Meritor full-time

    Pros

The management team is pushing down to turn the business around in Aftermarket business unit.

    Cons

Aftermarket future is uncertain. Workload is very high and feel always behind. Overloaded work load is a common theme in the Aftermarket business unit. No work-life balance. Lack of team spirit. Individual agenda seems to take place over team agenda. The plant associates are considered step child by the corporate management team. Too many finance directors left the company within a year which give bad signal to others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put people first before your business goals. People are the one who make differences in your organization and drive and achieve business goals. Allow people to take vacation, maintain a work life balance just like you do at the corporation. Take care if your people first!

    Pros

Superb engineering talent coupled with excellent business managers who understand their client's needs and anticipate where the trucking industry is going. Nobody is resting on their laurels.

    Cons

The company has a very long and strong history that can hinder development times. Better to be safe than sorry is "safe", but opportunities today only last a short while and the early bird catches the worm!! Nothing that talent and zeal of the employees cannot overcome!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They've got ready, aim down pat! Just need to pull the trigger a little more often...

I worked at Meritor full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are some great people at Meritor! Employees who are willing to go the extra mile to achieve the company's goals.

The company has great potential and the recent change in upper management may be a big boost.

    Cons

Bureaucratic Nightmare: Not the most efficient methods of doing things. Often when employees suggest (department dependent) more efficient methods of achieving goals (for example via the use of technology) there is little support.

Salary can be an issue. If you start at the company at the lower range of your grade, you are likely to remain at the low end.

HR Red Tape (needing this degree or that) prevents existing and tenured employees from advancing although they have demonstrated skills and proven experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your employees are your experts. Listen to them. Trust them. Reward their success and forgive (some) of their mistakes.

I have been working at Meritor full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - very lean and flexible
    - excellent learning opportunities; slightly understaffed, which provides remaining workforce with enormous potential to engage in new projects and take on more responsibilities
    - manager buy-in to developing talent

    Cons

    - turnover is a big issue, especially in retaining company-specific knowledge
    - long-term focus seems to be lacking, but senior management has acknowledged the lack of that and is taking steps to address it

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    retention and stability are welcome

I have been working at Meritor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Some very strong technical talent

    Cons

Lack of overall respect for the common employee.
Everything is an "emergency", lack of prioritization.
Inability to make strategic decisions and then when decisions are made, always seeming to 2nd guess them.
Consistant turnover at all levels, especially at the higher ranks. Very disconcerting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With our previous CEO no longer with us, the board needs to choose very wisely in deterimining our next top leader. Look from outside, not from within. Recently announced 3 year strategic plan is a step in the right direction but don't lose sight of the employees.
