    Pros

Good company to get your foot in the door, bad for long term growth.

    Cons

    Way too much middle management!!
3 of 3 positions at ML, I was more knowledgeable about my functions then my manager.

Former Employee - Financial Advisor Trainee (PMD) in Jacksonville, FL

    Pros

Benefits were decent...free lunches 2-3 times per week provided by the investment wholesalers. I would only recommend Merrill Lynch for a seasoned advisor from another firm, and who has an established client base. Endless investment products available.

    Cons

Cold, impersonal and toxic work environment! Local leadership team has no interest in the success of the new hire PMD Trainees, and as a result, you are left to learn the systems, products, services, and platforms on your own, but still have the expectation of reaching your unrealistic goals and hurdles. Way too many products, which makes it nearly impossible to give proper advice. Most of the CA's (client associates) are lazy and only assist the higher producing FA's. There is minimal support at best...Unfortunately, real sad part is that the clients are the practice runs for the PMD's...which leaves them with the probability of sub-par advice with their investments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put some real effort in the success of your new hire PD's...or at least pretend you care. Work on creating a positive team environment that promotes productivity...not and environment that sabotages the success of the new-hire PMD's. Trainees should be paired with seasoned FA's so that they can learn in the proper manner, instead of becoming overwhelmed with the platforms and options available. Revisit the balance of the goals vs current market environment for PMD's....goals are unrealistic and excessive.

    Pros

very nice campus in jacksonville, fl that is a good location in town. Health Insurance benefits were excellent compared to my current employer.

    Cons

Internal communication is terrible, no work done with a sense of urgency, phone job gets very redundent after a while.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

you were stupid 8 years ago when Stan O'Neal said that online brokerage firms would be a flash in the pan - now you're in a position where the Schwabs, Fido's, and TDAmeritrade's of the world are crushing you. Look for a way to get serious about that business.

    Pros

This is a great company. I've enjoyed my experience at Merrill Lynch and see myself staying for years to come. Merrill will train you as good as or better than the competition and the management at Merrill really cares for their employees.

    Cons

The transition to the Bank of America strategy has been somewhat of a bitter experience for some of my coworkers, but the changes have been minimal. Otherwise, not many complaints!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leadership is really outstanding. From my supervisor on up to corporate management, they lead with a loyalty to their employees and to their clients.

    Pros

    *Good Training
    *Fun, friendly, young co-workers
*Good pay, considering I was still in school, making the hourly equivalent of the salaried workers

    Cons

    *extremely boring
    *limited growth opportunities
    *obvious favoritism
*no opportunity for a full time job after I graduated college
    *no autonomy or creativity

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the employees feel like they are contributing something to society instead of spouting meaningless memorized scripts at people who have no idea what they are talking about.

    Pros

Great way to gain experience as a young professional. They do allow tuition reimbursement. They occasionally offer employee events. Managers are easy to work with for the most part. They allow job shadowing if you are interested in transferring to another position in company.

    Cons

Call center work can be frustrating. The hours you work when start off are not that convenient. Sometimes they focus too much on the numbers rather than the quality of service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide a little more advice during the performance reviews. Focus more on the quality rather than quantity on the calls.

    Pros

This is agreat place to start and recieve your liscensing
The company fosters growth and pays you to get started
You are managing an existing book and helping to increase assets without having the stress of needing to be out there on your own

    Cons

The beginning pay is low but that shouldbe expected in an industry where everything is expected to be made off of assets received and commissions mande

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There truthfully is nothing that I would change about this position. They allow you to get your licenses and also actually learn about investments. I spoken with too many branch born advisors that cant do anything but bring in assets

Not hard work and good job security.
Opens your knowledge of your own retirement.
Speak with very interesting people everyday.

    Cons

The interesting people you speak to everyday may not be calls you wish to take everyday five days a week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Great compensation, came into the ML world at the wrong time however. Technology is wonderful as are all the people.

    Cons

Can be cheap with basic employee needs. No overtime whatsoever. Will tell you to take mornings off, etc if you are working too late.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management can be like any big bank. They favor particular people. The people who move up the fastest aren't ever the best workers. Would rather loose an employee then give a small raise.

    Pros

Prior to the Bank of America deal, the culture at Mother Merrill was wonderful. There was definitely a sense of purpose and teamwork. Campus life was great.

    Cons

Lots of politics, but this is corporate America so what do you expect. There were and still are some sleazy people still working there. Some departments were very cliquish...almost like high school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Two words: Risk Management.
