I worked at Merrill Lynch as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice and Easy going people in Jersey city office. Some quality work being done there. So depends on the team you are in.

    Cons

Too laid back. People working from home a lot of times. Not a lot of front office development happens in this office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to inject more pride and quality in work being produced. Even if not front office development, higher standards and expectations can help people grow. Need to invest in quality trainings.

I worked at Merrill Lynch full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, office culture is good, decent compensation but good work/life balance. ability to interface several domestic internal and overseas teams. Also work with outside brokers. Great ability to network

    Cons

very uncertain due to all the layoffs. The overfocus on risk prevents the company from educating and encouraging their seasoned employees to do very well. Always seeking ways to cut costs through the use of workforce reductions then rehiring inexperienced workers at a lower salary.

I have been working at Merrill Lynch full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It is a good place to work if you want to learn more about the financial service industry. Merrill promotes teamwork and my peers and managers were very supportive so you don't feel like you're going at an enterprise project alone.

    Cons

There are days that you will work long demanding hours. Sometimes you have to work on the weekends. The benefits are pretty much the same as industry standards.

I worked at Merrill Lynch as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

The environment was great, a very helpful management. There was independent work allocated all the time in Corporate Actions, each break was solving a puzzle by understanding how things work. Overall great experience.

    Cons

Salary for the internship wasn't as high, though in the 2008-2009 period the market was not doing exactly well.

Great Environment to Learn & Grow, Poor Balance of Work / Life Ratio

    I worked at Merrill Lynch

    Pros

Incredible place to learn about new technologies
Great environment for building your career
Wonderful opportunities to learn about the Stock Market industry and new processes

    Cons

Stagnet career growth hindered by constant cost cutting, high turnover and the merger between BoFA and Merrill Legacy employees.
Constant downsizing due to unstable market place
Very poor balance of work to life ratio

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop worrying about the stock price of the firm's performance & shareholders and focus more on customer's attention and also provide more employees with direction. Break the walls down between departments to create more synergy between organizations instead of the BoFA & Merrill way!! Constantly cutting back on staff every two to three years to save on costs only hurts the firm creditabily and constantly causing them to lose top talent.
