    I worked at Merrill Lynch

    Pros

Good Brand Name to put on resume
HR structured employment and program very well so you got to network
Overall got to see and work on fairly large things that you may read in the news

    Cons

Some of the people I worked with were the most incompetent and socially awkward people ever. of course that type of thing may be expected in the back office but this was beyond bad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing. You managed to take a failing company and sell it to Bofa for a very attractive price to share holders. go capitalism.

    Pros

if u want a good technical shop with less pressure and pay, with work life balance. this is the place.

    Cons

if are hungry for growth, then this is not the place. promotion and raises are very slow and you need to put at least a decade to see things happening.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

i think management is doing a great job with having good quality employees, giving them a good work life balance.

    Pros

    -Compensation
    -Benefits
    -Vacation
-Commute (If you like the train)
    -Coworkers are very nice

    Cons

    -Not very challenging
    -Monotonous
-A monkey could do this job.
-You will probably be replaced by a programming macro in 5 years.
-Unless internet surfing is a valuable skill on a resume, you won't be gaining much here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote Senior members before hiring others over current employees. Although not entirely needed, more meetings about the goings-on in our business would be nice.

I have been working at Merrill Lynch

    Pros

Great work/Life balance, good pay and benefits, friendly colleagues and an overall great place to start a career in the investment industry.

    Cons

There needs to be more internal recruiting to help further talented young employees' careers. Management needs to interact with lower level employees on a higher basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to be more candid an open with employees. Pay can be raised a bit to be more in line with similar positions at other firms.

I have been working at Merrill Lynch

    Pros

People, culture and pay. Great balance of work and good quality of life. Industry leader in the wealth management space.

    Cons

Since the merger with Bank of America, there has been significant turnover at the senior management level. Loss of culture?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Of course everyone would like to be paid more. More communication from senior management. More efficient decision making process. Less turnover at senior management- perhaps pay them more?

I have been working at Merrill Lynch

    Pros

Merrill has a great name and with the buyout from Bank of America, now has much stability. Salaries/Rates were good.

    Cons

Many folks in our department do not know if they will be around for much longer. Job stability doesn't exist!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, the leadership is doing a good job in securing the future of the firm, however, layoffs were quick and decisive, only to bring many people back.

    I worked at Merrill Lynch

    Pros

high degree of growth opportunities. Most high performenrs were recognized and rewarded. Friendly and diverse working enviroment Usual employment location in or near NYC making commuting easy.

    Cons

Upper management had no idea how to manage the business, poor support from Management, unethical treatment with respect to compensation - in 2008 VPs and AVPs had to take a 17% minimum cut in bonus to provide an average 3% to clerical (non manager) employees while upper management continued to get a percentage increase over 2007. High work volumes were not managed correctly resulting in a burn-out of employees due to frequent 12-15 hour work days (including weekends). Lack of tech advancement to accomodate yearly business volume increases. Poor communication when finalizing new product reviews resulting in some business groups having an inability to accomodate the new business as they were unaware of the NPR - resulting in the inability to accomodate changes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Either resign or start taking some business classes - Merrill Lynch failed due to the poor management.

It's a firm with an aggressive management team, strategic growth plans and business results.
It provides professional growth through training programs, internal mobility and challenging assignments that give you the opportunity to contribute to the firm's success
It provides a supportive, collegial environment with people who value your experience and skills and take the time to teach and mentor you

I have been working at Merrill Lynch

    Pros

I liked the rate and I needed the job

    Cons

It's a big company, so a bit bureaucratic

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less emails going around, more direct management instead of a lot of meetings - jet tell the employee what to do instead of getting into a conference
