I have been working at Merrill Lynch full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Diverse set of technologies and challenges, massive market share and complexity, extremely challenging and always interesting.

    Cons

    Highly procedural, slow to change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep it simple -- don't add process to solve what are relational problems. Avoid region specific focus and think global.

Merrill Lynch - Traditional Wire house

Former Employee - Financial Advisor in New York, NY

I worked at Merrill Lynch full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pros: Brand recognition, nice offices, a good amount of marketing provided. If you can get in, it makes it easier for you to go to another firm once they see Merrill Lynch on your resume. This also goes for Chase, Wells Fargo, and Morgan Stan.

    Cons

Cons: Same exact products, services, and business models as every other large wire house. You start off, get licensed, get a cubicle, and then the hurdles come at you. From my personal experience there were quite a bit of politics and employees were treated differently across the board with goals and exceptions. 1/10 Advisors makes it past the first year, 1/10 2nd, and less the 1/10 the 3rd. Clients may receive more attention at a smaller firm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please try to redefine the new advisor model. With the aging advisor base within your organization you are going to have a HUGE client attrition rate in the next decade.

I worked at Merrill Lynch as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good tapas bar. Petting zoo seemed a little odd, but who am I to judge. Not enough Christian values for my tastes.

    Cons

Promotions based on gladiatorial combat. In-office arena could stand to be remodeled. Hard to attract top-flight talent with outdated facilities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move karaoke hour back to 2pm to give everyone time to digest lunch. Hard to belt out Total Eclipse of the Heart with the suitable level of emotion the song deserves in between belching.

I have been working at Merrill Lynch full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

have great colleagues , compensation is fair for my position - lots of learing opportunities

    Cons

Depending on your role can sometimes be difficult to move ahead. Not a great work life balance particulary for management- particulary hard for middle managers who are puttng in an a lot of hours but not getting the compensation to match

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better work life balance would go a long way in boosting employee morale
