    Pros

A lot of progression and growth opportunities. I studied for the series 7 while I was there and then got my 66 after I left

    Cons

It's a large workplace so it's easy to get caught in the mix

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Place a better emphasis on communication between departments. These delays affect client service profoundly.

    Pros

Very helpful and driven coworkers, no nonsense approach to work, had great infrastructure and full access to company research

    Cons

Managers had very little time to offer guidance and feedback, short on time for just about anything so you have to be careful about not making mistakes

Merrill Lynch - Traditional Wire house

Former Employee - Financial Advisor in New York, NY

    Pros

Pros: Brand recognition, nice offices, a good amount of marketing provided. If you can get in, it makes it easier for you to go to another firm once they see Merrill Lynch on your resume. This also goes for Chase, Wells Fargo, and Morgan Stan.

    Cons

Cons: Same exact products, services, and business models as every other large wire house. You start off, get licensed, get a cubicle, and then the hurdles come at you. From my personal experience there were quite a bit of politics and employees were treated differently across the board with goals and exceptions. 1/10 Advisors makes it past the first year, 1/10 2nd, and less the 1/10 the 3rd. Clients may receive more attention at a smaller firm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please try to redefine the new advisor model. With the aging advisor base within your organization you are going to have a HUGE client attrition rate in the next decade.

    Pros

Projects are interesting and there are always new ones available (keeps it interesting.) Colleagues are friendly and the environment is supportive. Working alongside experienced financial advisers provide a good look into the career as a financial planner. Client confidentiality and trustworthiness is a number one for the company.

    Cons

Not much to say here, I really enjoy my time at the company so far. Maybe just that at times the environment is too familial and a few employees may take advantage of the friendliness from upper management.

    Summer Intern

    Former Employee - Summer Intern
    Former Employee - Summer Intern

    Pros

Was given a fair amount of autonomy, and a lot was expected as a summer intern. Never had to do any filing or stereotypical monotonous work. Felt as though I was looked at as an entry level employee as opposed to a summer intern.

    Cons

My experience may have been unique in the difficulty of work I was asked to do, others had much more mundane days. I was not exposed to many other interns. There isnt much of a program to speek of, whether or not that be a good thing. Pay is low comparative to other large internships (UBS, GS, PNC)

The financial platform is stellar, with almost unlimited investment options to help service your clients plus lending capabilities.

    Cons

You run your own practice, so you must know what tasks will make you money and which will not.

DO NOT GO INTO THE PMD Program!

    Pros

The name and brand of the company.

    Cons

The training program is awful, They don't train you at all. The put these enormous goals for you every month that are nearly impossible for make and they fail to tell you that you can only get your bonus if it exceeds the previous bonus you received the prior month. So, for example, if you were to make a commission every month you don't necessarily see a penny of that. No one in management knows how the PMD program works and cannot give you any guidance. You are left for fend for yourself and unless you have a substantial network and are willing to make nothing for 3 years and then hope for the best, I would recommend looking at JP Morgan or Morgan Stanley or Goldman. All of them have exceptional training program and give you ample time to learn the business before throwing you in the deep end. Also, they do not pay overtime even though you will be working overtime during the time period that you are studying for your exams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn what it is that you are doing and create a platform that people can excel at versus creating an environment that makes it impossible to succeed.

    Pros

Very relaxed environment, very supportive close tight knit office. Plenty of time to get into the office and get work accomplished before the end of the day. The really dedicated advisors get in early and stay late, but many got in around nine and left around two or three along with lunch breaks. Easy to separate work and personal life as well as share it with co-workers if you want.

    Cons

Many advisors simply cold call off of lead sheets and are not very knowledgeable on their clients nor do they meet them face to face very often
