  1. Technical Intern

I worked at Merrimack Pharmaceuticals part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

A lot of responsibility for an intern. Free reign to build a successful product.

    Cons

Large amounts of office politics. Being a big-pharma company, turnover is high. Teams live and die by the success of the pharmaceuticals they work on.

    Advice to Management

Consider a flatter management model with resources pooled across product lines.

    Pros

Growing fast paced company that has done a lot with very little. Diverse and unique platform. Great vacation policy (5 weeks) if your manager is accommodating.

    Cons

Merrimack prides themselves on their culture. However, it becomes apparent that any potential for career development only occurs if you maneuver your way through the politics and are part of the exclusive elite. Management is inexperienced and not genuine. Many of them have learned as the company has grown and have not been able to utilize experienced staff to their full potential.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees. Plan for the future (> 3 months), most employees are looking for career development.

    Pros

Hard working friendly people. Generous vacation policy. Good corporate culture with many fun activities. Good benefits. Open information flow. Collaborative spirit within the Research department.

    Cons

Lack of experienced people in many key positions. Out of touch HR. Toxic politics in all areas of the company. Promotions are hidden and arbitrary. Career development is practically non-existent. Frantic work pace. Flat structure eliminates traditional reporting schemes. Chronic lack of resources. Falling behind on innovation.

    Advice to Management

If you have no prior experience as a senior exec in a publicly traded pharmaceutical company, resign now so Merrimack can replace you with someone who has. Hire HR people who understand and respect highly educated scientists.

    Cons

Can get too focused at times. The company is still early stage and still growing. Kind of academic environment and therefore real world experience can be limited but it will grow with the company.

    Pros

You do interesting work. There are many opportunities to grow and learn. Mathematics ("Network Biology") is used in some innovative ways at the company.

    Cons

While I was with Merrimack there seemed to be some growing pains. The company is undergoing growth (great), but is not yet sure how to be bigger than 200 or so people (less great). Work/life balance could use some improvement as people are often stretched thin. I heard more than once that "everything is a priority." That's not conducive to work being an enjoyable.

    Advice to Management

Kill the "everything is a priority" culture.
