    Technical Intern

Former Employee - Intern in Cambridge, MA
Former Employee - Intern in Cambridge, MA

I worked at Merrimack Pharmaceuticals part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

A lot of responsibility for an intern. Free reign to build a successful product.

    Cons

Large amounts of office politics. Being a big-pharma company, turnover is high. Teams live and die by the success of the pharmaceuticals they work on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider a flatter management model with resources pooled across product lines.

    Pros

    - Merrimack is stocked with excellent scientists working on first-in-class molecules to cure cancer.
    - Everyone is encouraged to spend some their work week on pet projects
    - Flat organizational structure gives everyone a chance to lead

    Cons

All the typical cons of working in a startup environment-- minimal administrative & IT support, hours can be long, must be willing to things outside of your core expertise

Cutting edge science, Intelligent minds, inclusive environment. Good work-life balance. Enjoyed working here. Very good company to start your career. I wish them good luck and bringing life saving medicines to the patients.

    Cons

Can get too focused at times. The company is still early stage and still growing. Kind of academic environment and therefore real world experience can be limited but it will grow with the company.

    Pros

    You do interesting work.
There are many opportunities to grow and learn.
Mathematics ("Network Biology") is used in some innovative ways at the company.

    Cons

While I was with Merrimack there seemed to be some growing pains. The company is undergoing growth (great), but is not yet sure how to be bigger than 200 or so people (less great).

Work/life balance could use some improvement as people are often stretched thin. I heard more than once that "everything is a priority." That's not conducive to work being an enjoyable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Kill the "everything is a priority" culture.
