Pros
Co-workers were all friendly and helpful to newbies. Managers not pushy about my not being able to have customers open up store credit.
Cons
Customers tried on a billion things and left them everywhere so doing all the store clean-up was a pain.
Advice to Senior Management
Too bad the store closed down. Leadership personnel were all very nice to their subordinates, and made working there a good learning experience.
Pros
Opening credit accounts is an issue when you work here, but managers weren't *too* upset if it was one of those days where you just couldn't open any accounts on a certain day.
Cons
Very hectic work environment depending on your department. I worked shoes, and there was always a mess to clean up by mid-day.
Advice to Senior Management
Be friendlier to employees, and stop being so quick to throw your fellow co-workers under the bus in order to save your own self.
Pros
Large headquarters, coworkers were easy to get along with, management was willing to answer questions and conerns
Cons
The Company implemented unsuccessful rules and programs which lead to its ultimate demise. Some management were unwilling to shift from the "old way" of doing things.
Advice to Senior Management
None

Advice to Senior Management

Be kind and considerate of your team
People have lives and families
Pros
Store discounts, senior staff didn't know who was who in employment.
Cons
When Mervyn's decided to file a chapter 11 in the state of Oregon. They store management team stopped looking employees in the eye at work.
Advice to Senior Management
None they are gone now.
Pros
Flexible scheduling, very accommodating as long as you give notice.
Management was competent and helpful.
Hires good employees, for the most part.
Cons
The flexible scheduling made some days difficult when not enough people came in.
Hours could be very tight, some people only got to work 10 a week.
Advice to Senior Management
Excellent communication between managers and employees.
The Mervyn's card might have been pushed a little too much, could irritate many customers from time to time and the reward was not great.
Pros
There were discount incentives and gift card raffles to various eateries for opening new credit card accounts. Very flexible schedules (allowed me to work the early shift 5am-9am).
Cons
There were just too many clothes/items that they were constantly thrown or tossed on the ground by customers during the big sales, that it was almost impossible to keep up with the merchandising tasks. I would fold clothes nice and neatly in one section, then 5 minutes later would turn around to see a huge mess. It was crazy.
Advice to Senior Management
He was very nice and helpful as always. He was energetic and enthusiastic each day he came in to work.
Pros
Great opportunities for growth
Great people
Cons
Management did not control costs pre- sale of the company.
Management after the sale was terribly ill equipped to understand the problems the company was facing. The new management was very poor and did not communicate well.
Advice to Senior Management
I would never work with any of the management team that "managed" Mervyn's during it's private equity days. They ran the company into the ground.
Pros
the store had nice clothes and targeted the average persons budget which allowed the every day family to purchase there ...helped the community
Cons
Required long hours and sometimes not flexibles scheduling for employees
Advice to Senior Management
Treat employees as part of the team and try to find a niche for the company
