Pros
good place to work where people help you when you need them to
culture was great
team was supportive of each other
Cons
HQ building was in an old store
cafeteria was terrible
promotions hard to come by
innovation was not at the forefront
Pros
To get experience in a retail setting to help the individual to become well rounded.
Cons
A limited opportunity to move up in the organization.
Advice to Senior Management
The management needs to be more open minded.
Pros
- Flexible Scheduling
- Employee Discount
Cons
- Never staffed well enough
- Poor communication from senior management
- High Turnover
- Too many bosses
- No coaching or employee development
Pros
The job itself was really easy. When there were no customers just made sure the shelves and racks looked nice and stocked accordingly. We were all properly trained for handling the cash register so I never had a problem with that. There was always a manager available to help you. Overall it was a nice job when you're in high school.
Cons
The pay was low, but it's retail. They weren't very understanding about working around my school schedule so I had to leave.
Advice to Senior Management
The departments were like high school cliques and it was dumb as hell. Think of ways to bring the store together as one and meet goals altogether rather than who's better than who.
Pros
-Supervisors treated employees fairly.
-Understanding when one asks for time off.
-Easy to have someone cover your shift
Cons
-Departments like the Kids department gets completely trashed.
-The loading/receiving dock was very disorganized.
-Inventory was very disorganized.
Advice to Senior Management
-Computer technology was very outdated
-Needs better merchandise to keep up with competitors
-Needs a better loss prevention system. Merchandise always missing.
Unfortunately, the store closed down.
Pros
Fun Environment, Educational, advancement opportunities
Cons
70+ hour work weeks, corporate can not make up their minds
Pros
their customer services and friendly environment
Cons
old manager with less experience in retail lines
Advice to Senior Management
keep work flow steady
Pros
Management was willing to adjust your work responsibilities based on the skills you quickly learned and used on the job. I enjoyed the occasional catered lunches and respect for our lunch and break times. Working at Mervyns taught me exactly how a business is conducted in a retail store. I learned to be quick, effective and conscientious at what I did. Mervyns will be greatly missed since it closed down.
Cons
Very stressful environment, due to the amount of merchandise you must push to the floor, ring up at the register, account for via logistics and dealing with customers who may or may not be on their best behavior is stressful.
Advice to Senior Management
Push for higher salaries, working for minimum wage is demoralizing even for employees who are excellent at their job. Work closer with Loss Prevention to weed out employees who steal.
Pros
Good store managers and colleagues
Cons
Dead end job with little to no prospects
Advice to Senior Management
Diversify merchandise to compete with Kohl's.
Pros
Great teamwork, flexible hours, always something to do
Cons
Some to of the shoppers were rude and obnoxious.
Advice to Senior Management
none
