    Mediocre

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe Met Office is a good place to work in meteorology or climate research. Living in Devon is nice, especially in the summer months. The Met Office has a cycling and sporting culture.

ConsThe operational side of the business means high security for everyone. This stifles creativity and inhibits research. The open-plan offices result in lots of distractions but few genuine interactions. The Met Office is currently second to ECMWF in medium-range weather forecasting, so the best people go there instead.

Advice to Senior ManagementSplit the Met Office into separate research and operations sections. Get rid of large, open-plan offices for research. Reduce staff numbers to pay for higher salaries for those who stay.

An interesting place to work but low pay and little chance of progression

Scientific Software Engineer (Current Employee) Exeter, England (UK)

    ProsIntelligent friendly people
Generally a relaxed place to work
    The work is mostly interesting
Plenty of options to work from home or take flexitime
    World leading research organization

    ConsNoisy open plan office space
    Very uncompetitive pay
Could be seen a something of a career dead end, there are no real competitors

Advice to Senior ManagementStop wasting time on websites telling us how to work or to generate ideas, just pay people more and let them get on with it.

A great place with some great people, but severely let down by extremely low pay.

Scientist (Current Employee) Exeter, England (UK)

ProsEveryone has heard of the Met Office.
The work is usually very interesting.
To be part of something truly world class.
    A nice office building.

    ConsPay is low.
    Pay progression is practically non-existent.
You have to put up with increasing amounts of Lime Green in day to day work life.

Advice to Senior ManagementSort out the pay and everything else will suddenly fix itself.
