I have been working at Metra full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Paid training, hard to get fired due to company agreement with union, good pay

    Cons

DIfficult to get into desired clerk positions (Seniority based). Obtaining positions at main headquarters (management or otherwise) can be difficult unless you know someone in upper management (political).

I worked at Metra full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay and excellent benefits. Excellent training.

    Cons

Management doesn't seem to care about what is going on front-line wise. As long as you keep your mouth shut and try not to make things better you will see longevity there. Don't expect to get promoted unless you know someone. Plenty of political hires and patronage hires. Tight knit upper management keeps the jobs between themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat you minority employees with respect and listen to what they say. Bring up young educated employees and train them a new way.

I have been working at Metra full-time

    Pros

Low cost of benefits, good work schedule.

    Cons

The place is allergic to change, nothing but lifers and people with questionable ethics in upper management. Toxic culture where people who want to do the right thing are forced to keep their heads down just to get through the day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Leave.

I have been working at Metra full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great work/life balance. Good location in downtown Chicago. My job involves a lot of time out of the office.

    Cons

Corruption, mismanagement, dysfunction. Political corruption and lack of management professionalism have created an agency with significant lack of professionalism, poor support for employees in terms of compensation and workforce development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make needed administrative reforms, particularly in the IT and HR areas. Political reforms are needed but will eventually be brought from above. Professionalize the staff - appreciate training and workforce development opportunities.

I have been working at Metra full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Decent although not fair pay.

    Cons

ZERO opportunity for advancement. Qualifications are ignored. Usually friends, family or race and gender of the month move up. Positions are posted and then rules are incorporated to allow specific group to apply, regardless of qualification or talent. Never any support from management when it comes to disputed. Union leaders negotiate for themselves and not benefit of bottom 3/4 of membership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look real close at those who can make a difference and stop feeling threatened that someone who has a clue may actually be a benefit. Take the politics of the board and let professionals run this system instead of politicians worried about votes instead of a successful professional organization.

I worked at Metra full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Competitive Salary (depending on what personnel "grade" you're hired into).

    Cons

Politics, clout and nepotism continues to undermine effective decision-making. Labor/Management relations are strained - "Union-busting" is implied by the many changes in the processes by which contract employees are able to move "up", and job titles/descriptions are inconsistent with job requirements. Too many "Chiefs" with essentially the same job function.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be fair to employees (management & contract) and the commuters. Stop saying one thing and doing another. Correct the issues that make for a hostile (negative - poor morale) work environment. Above all, keep the commuters' concerns at the forefront.

    Pros

    Stable employment is about it.

    Cons

Lack of Leadership and extreme workplace negativity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

"All" Senior Level Managers should be required to hold or earn a bachelor's degree in Management in order to keep their position and/or be promoted.

Good benefits, but doesn't include (FREE METRA RIDES). I had an interview that lasted approximately 2 hours. The interview consisted over 25 technical questions and 10 behavior questions. It felt like I was a college student versus a seasoned IT professional.

    Cons
