    IT Position - Interview Exp

    Network Administrative (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsGood benefits, but doesn't include (FREE METRA RIDES). I had an interview that lasted approximately 2 hours. The interview consisted over 25 technical questions and 10 behavior questions. It felt like I was a college student versus a seasoned IT professional.

ConsDoesn't include (FREE METRA RIDES). The interview approach, make me feel like a college student versus a seasoned IT professional.

    Serious problems

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsLow cost of benefits, good work schedule.

ConsThe place is allergic to change, nothing but lifers and people with questionable ethics in upper management. Toxic culture where people who want to do the right thing are forced to keep their heads down just to get through the day.

    Advice to Senior ManagementLeave.

    It's a job, not a career

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

    ProsDecent although not fair pay.

ConsZERO opportunity for advancement. Qualifications are ignored. Usually friends, family or race and gender of the month move up. Positions are posted and then rules are incorporated to allow specific group to apply, regardless of qualification or talent. Never any support from management when it comes to disputed. Union leaders negotiate for themselves and not benefit of bottom 3/4 of membership.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook real close at those who can make a difference and stop feeling threatened that someone who has a clue may actually be a benefit. Take the politics of the board and let professionals run this system instead of politicians worried about votes instead of a successful professional organization.

    Disappointing

    Analyst (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsGreat work/life balance. Good location in downtown Chicago. My job involves a lot of time out of the office.

ConsCorruption, mismanagement, dysfunction. Political corruption and lack of management professionalism have created an agency with significant lack of professionalism, poor support for employees in terms of compensation and workforce development.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake needed administrative reforms, particularly in the IT and HR areas. Political reforms are needed but will eventually be brought from above. Professionalize the staff - appreciate training and workforce development opportunities.

    "Forked-tongue"

Program Development Section Chief (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsCompetitive Salary (depending on what personnel "grade" you're hired into).

ConsPolitics, clout and nepotism continues to undermine effective decision-making. Labor/Management relations are strained - "Union-busting" is implied by the many changes in the processes by which contract employees are able to move "up", and job titles/descriptions are inconsistent with job requirements. Too many "Chiefs" with essentially the same job function.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe fair to employees (management & contract) and the commuters. Stop saying one thing and doing another. Correct the issues that make for a hostile (negative - poor morale) work environment. Above all, keep the commuters' concerns at the forefront.

Easy job, often I do nothing; however there are no advancement opportunities or raises due to financial constraints.

    Service Analyst (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsThere is little work to do, so you can surf the web all day
    Lots of vacation and PTO
    Only 40 hours a week

ConsWe haven't had raises in over 3 years due to lack of funds
    No chance for promotion
    Very little investment in employees
Nobody here cares about the quality of their work

Advice to Senior ManagementLay off half of the staff and let some go getters pick up the slack. Pay top talent in order to retain it.
