I worked at Metro News as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Very satisfied with the work environment and staff. Awesome company with great incentives that provide exceptional benefits. Loved my time here.

    Cons

A lot of repetitive work. Very cliquey at times. Long and burdensome commute (especially during rush hours). The bathroom is always occupied by someone taking an above average long poop.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work!!

    Pros

worklife balance, flexible, abililty to be creative and innovate. you can work as a team or on an individual basis.

    Cons

not everyone is on the same page, lack of communication and consistency, inability to grow, some processes are very repetitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

they need to communicate better, invest in employees, listen to employees, give incentives to good work ethics, ideas, and perfomance.

I have been working at Metro News full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Perks are great, money is great, really well organized company, good leads, international presence, innovative product. I really did enjoy working there for the most part.

    Cons

Their leads weren't always great quality and they really expected you to make something out of every single one that came across your desk. The work life balance could have used some help as I would get emails and calls from my manager into the evening and on vacation which was disconcerting. Honestly, I absolutely loved working there and probably would have continued had it not been for direct management where I was. Having an all female office was difficult at times and it was public knowledge that she would use certain employees as scapegoats and bully them relentlessly. I know of 4 employees that have left under the duress of that situation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps take a look at your management at a local level. Particularly in Edmonton.

    Pros

Casual dress code and environment, lots of fun people to work with. Benefits are ok. Location is good.

    Cons

Pay is dismal if you're not in sales. Company promotes culture and 'values' in theory but not practice. Favourtism is obvious. Changes appear to be on the fly and not well thought out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize staff outside of sales for a job well done. Practice what you preach. Communicate before not after a change.

    Pros

Great culture, revenue driven organization that is entrepreneurial, creative as agile. Growing in a declining industry.

    Cons

With an entrepreneurial culture can come a lack of structure. Growth and change happens quickly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to develop your employees and keep giving them a voice. Keep celebrating successes and reward high performance across the organization.

I worked at Metro News part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The job finishes at 9 or 10 am and there is opportunities to take on different projects.

    Cons

This is by far the worst experience ever for me, I had 2 paycheques dishonoured which created a ripple effect for my finances. The most surprising thing was the attitude of indifference that was displayed when a resolution was sought. Do not work for this place, your self worth, AND possibly your bank account will suffer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps encourage mgmt/payroll to stop taking an attitude of indifference and resolve serious issues like dishonoured cheques within days and not weeks. Perhaps ads should not be posted if the company cannot honour thier payments.

I worked at Metro News full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    Tremendous potential at the time.

    Cons

Complete change in upper management and internal restructuring completely changed the "culture" and made it difficult to get any IT related projects approved or supported. Regional Office Managers had conflicting mandates and priorities. This must have changed by now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your staff. They are the ones in the trenches and are able to contribute valuable workflow suggestions. They are a valuable resource and should be treated as such.
