I worked at Metropolitan Community College full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They had the best benefits anywhere. If I needed to leave for an appt. or emergency, all I had to do was work it out with my supervisor. I never had a problem with this. No one was looking over my shoulder. The students were my evaluated me. They had a certain number of training hours you had to complete during the year. It was reasonable and very helpful.

    Cons

None. I loved working there. I wish I could teach online. I resign to leave due to a disability years ago. I have never gone a day without missing my best job ever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I believe Metro gives internal promotions before giving it to the outside applicants. The leadership was excellent. Someone created a very intensive benefits brochure and the school values are those that I believe in wholehearterdly.

I have been working at Metropolitan Community College part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Free tuition. Sick time and vacation.

    Cons

They rely heavily on part time temps. It's very hard to become full time.

I have been working at Metropolitan Community College part-time for less than a year

    Pros

In a lot of ways class structure is quite flexible. You are more or less trusted with creating almost any lesson plan you want. Nice and informal.

    Cons

There are lots of weird things that have to go through huge bureaucratic death loops in order to get ironed out or forgotten.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I feel in my limited roll things are pretty good for a lumbering institution such as a school. The IT/backend is always in a state of chaos but tends to work OK when needed.

I worked at Metropolitan Community College full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Enjoyed working for Darrel Meyer and Domenick Brouillette.

    Cons

Not much leave-way for quick advancement; must have degrees to go along with skills you may have in order to gain higher wages.

I worked at Metropolitan Community College part-time

    Pros

Metropolitan Community Colleges has a good work environment. Flexible schedules and good college atmosphere. Good teams depending on which department of work for.

    Cons

Budget restrictions are leading several people to retire and be replaced with contract labor. Contract labor in the other hand is not as valued and respected as tenured employees - long term this will create an impact on morale.

I have been working at Metropolitan Community College part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Lots of downtime.
    Steady hours.
    Free software due to MSDNAA.

    Cons

Limited to maximum of 1000 hours worked per year.
    No benefits at all.
Downtime can get very boring at points.
Students can have unreal expectations of what you are actually supposed to do in regards to their homework.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This job is supposed to teach you troubleshooting and help desk skills, yet there is very little of that. We basically just babysit the computer labs day in and day out. We occasionally help students and faculty with minor issues and try to avoid being forced to do their homework for them.

I have been working at Metropolitan Community College part-time for less than a year

    Pros

All of my supervisors were very open and welcoming.

No one there is any kind of discriminatory.

My supervisors are very good about being straight forward when I'm doing something wrong, and also give many praises when I'm doing well.

When I was having personal problems, they understood, listened, and were lenient enough to let me figure it all out. I was almost certain that I would be fired because of how much my issues were affecting my work ethic.

    Cons

The pay could definitely be better, but I love my job and it's such a great experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on making us feel valued with a better compensation.

I have been working at Metropolitan Community College

    Pros

Suuuuper long Christmas vacation & paid snow days! Benefits can't be beat. My coworkers are great and I'm very happy that I made the move into higher ed.

    Cons

It can be tough to get to know people outside of your department since the campuses are so spread out and there sometimes is a lack of internal communication. Some people are hard to work with because they aren't open to change/new technology, but I guess that's probably the same wherever you go.
