    Pros

Compensation is either very good or less than private sector depending on area of expertise. In my case it was fantastic. Benefits are outstanding and begin first day. Free bus:rail pass.

    Cons

Started as a temp but that doesn't automatically get you the job. You have to go through a competitive process with everyone else that applies. Process normally takes 12 weeks.

    Advice to Management

None yet. Just started a few months ago so will update in time.

I worked at Metropolitan Council full-time

    Pros

The pay and benefits are pretty darn good. Its a quasi-government agency that doesn't have much oversight by the groups it serves or the state and federal government. Therefore, overtime and budgets really don't matter unless you are very very high up in the organization

    Cons

The "family" concept - if you didn't start as a lowly bus driver or janitor or technician, you have zero "street cred" as far as management goes. They don't like to hear what they are doing wrong, even if its something that can be easily changed. They are very stuck in their ways. The Met Council as a whole is more about Metro Transit and the bus service then they are about anything else, and it shows because of who is in charge. Most of the people who are in leadership positions tend to have zero actual education, just a lot of years of service in a particular position, thereby making them probably not the best choice to be making long term planning decisions for the agency.

    Advice to Management

Think outside the box, don't be so narow minded and pass the torch from the "long term" employees to other "long term employees" new blood is the reason that businesses grow and survive.

I worked at Metropolitan Council full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Really interesting co-workers, steady hours, good benefits, and decent salary

    Cons

No career path. You stay where you started at. It can be a toxic environment. Very political and stressful.

I have been working at Metropolitan Council (More than a year)

    Pros

Many organizational benefits great learning experience (i am an intern) good pay there is a lot of policy that is involved with the council and it's great to be involved and knowledgable about regional govt.

    Cons

Trying to transition from an intern to a full employee - it is not easy and you compete with external candidates. the organization is not as ethnically diverse as it could be no real cons other than that

    Advice to Management

I actually dont have any advice. i have enjoyed my experience and wouldnt mind continuing to work at metc. I would create a program that helps interns transition into full-time employeers.

I have been working at Metropolitan Council full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great culture, good pay, plus you're doing a public service! And public transit is free. Love this employer. Lots of room for growth and a great place for women to work.

    Cons

I honestly can't think of any cons. Oh, I guess the parking in downtown St. Paul is expensive but if you work at Metro Transit in Minneapolis or just take public transit (free) you're fine.

I worked at Metropolitan Council full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Flexible start/finish time, benefits okay.

    Cons

Training is a joke. You better be a pro at your position after 1 week because everything will get dumped on you after that. It's also like high school - employees have their clicks and love to gossip behind your back (but they're always nice to your face). Parking sucks! The "lower class" employees have to pay for their parking in nearby public parking garages, while select upper management, gets to park for free in a heated underground parking garage.

    Advice to Management

Create better training programs that actually work. Don't always hide: only going from the underground parking garage directly to your office & then back down to the garage for a day without talking with the employees in your department(s) just creates an impression that you're an elitist and only care about yourself. Why do you think the other offices refer to the Regional Office as "The Ivory Tower?" Offer your employees at least a discount on public parking.

I have been working at Metropolitan Council full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The Council provides for a good balance between working and one's personal life, and this is appreciated. Pay is fair, although still not in keeping with the private sector. Benefits are generous and there are good options to choose from. All in all, it's a well-run organization with a lot of smart and hard working people to call colleagues.

    Cons

Management is sometimes confused and works at cross purposes. Can be (you guessed it) highly political and communication breaks down more often than it should. Compensation is not in line with private sector and other government agencies. Advancement and promotion are like pulling teeth.

    Advice to Management

Get in tune and in touch with the aspirations of your employees, as well as what their workload actually is - one can be overwhelmed and management has no idea. Don't let your employees get stuck in a position at level X and burn out.
