I have been working at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-Excellent salaries, health benefits, 401k match, pension
    -9/80 schedule
-Smart co-workers who take pride and ownership in their jobs
-Generally supportive management, which is a major reason why employees are compelled to give their best
-MWD's significant importance to Southern California for nearly a century (job security)
-Unparalleled tuition reimbursement program as well as extensive internal training resources

    Cons

-Very difficult to get a job at MWD. Tremendous competition and high number of applicants for limited openings. With that said, MWD gets to pick and choose the cream of the crop but there are some dead weight employees who got in for political reasons
-relatively old pool of employees who carry a wealth of knowledge but are stuck in the 1970's and refuse to budge
-Excellent salaries for great employees but also for dead weight employees as well
-9/80 schedule is great but many jobs can be handled via telecommute and that option isn't offered for most. HQ location is a trafifc nightmare.
-Scarce time off for newer employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work. Maintain symbiotic relationship with the various employee unions.

I have been working at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits, probably the best compare to all the agencies out there. People are friendly and professional. Will get returned call the same day from your associates. The people actually care about their jobs and gives heart in what they do. The company culture is relaxed and fun, but professional at the same time. Because it's one of the best agencies, the selection process is extremely difficult, so only the best people get hired. You are working with experienced, highly qualified individuals. Feels like a private company but has the stability of a public agency. Every other friday off 9/80 schedule, 14 holiday, vacations, fully paid for insurance (HMO and PPO), 401k company match and pension!

    Cons

It's very difficult to get a job here because every job posting has over 300 applicates, so it might take awhile till you get in. But once you get in the rewards are tremendous. There are deadweights employees that linger from long time ago that really do nothing but cannot be fire because of the union. But overall everyone does their job well. Promotion wil take awhile, because it's not that many promotion opportunities come up. That's changing since half the agency is now retirement age and there will be high turnover in next couple years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the younger generation and new people options for telecommuting, and alternative schedules, since many of us have families now, the strict 9/80 across the board schedule is very hard on us.

I have been working at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California full-time

    Pros

Excellent perks; downtown location makes commuting from all over a breeze; every other Friday off; pension; union; superb tuition reimbursement program; complete job security

    Cons

Simple things take forever to get done; too many overpaid unskilled employees cause extreme inefficiency and frustration; resistance to change - people just accept things the way they are because that's the way they have always been done; lack of advancement opportunities for most; very political; because it is a public agency, management seems overly cautious/scared to make moves and decisions at times; too much job security and protection of the wrong people - bad behavior seems to be rewarded and good behavior punished

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote from within; stop blocking good people - recognize and reward them; get rid of the deadweight coasters and the micro-managers who slow everything down

    Pros

The benefits are amazing. Holidays, flexible work schedules, training opportunities. The possibilities are endless once you get your foot in the door. Yes there is a union, but its for the betterment of the employees.

    Cons

Large number of soon to retire employees, hiring wasnt consistent, so there will be alot of empty slots soon, that new workers wont know the ropes

I have been working at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Employees receive excellent benefits and competitive compensation. There is less risk of lay off than private industry and the work is interesting.

    Cons

Limited opportunities to move up in the company. Often times promotions are political rather than based on competency. The structure of the employee evaluation process makes it difficult to reward high producing employees.
