    Pros

Good balance between one’s personal life and expected work load
A reasonable starting salary and compensation
Talented and friendly team members to cooperate with
Through past acquisitions, the company has a very long and diverse history of great accomplishments and novel innovations
Viewed as the Mining Supplier that provides the best equipment solutions

    Cons

A lack of future direction regarding your career
While reasonable, the salary could be better
There are too many “silos” separating the various groups that make up the company, complicating the communication channels and creating unnecessary duplicate work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take out the “silos” by simplifying the structure of the company (i.e. simplify the MAC structure by allowing better communication between the SBL and the Capital side of the business)

    Pros

Metso is a good company if you want to interact with many cultures. You can also learn a lot about the mining industry and international business strategies.

    Cons

There have bee several reorganizations in the past 6 years, resulting in a poorly managed corporate structure. Internal projects for change management and corporate realignment get started and then fall apart or are abandoned when the next regime change happens. This makes it very difficult as an employee to find a strong leadership resource or to feel like a successful contributor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop making changes to impress the stockholders and take advantage of the vast talent you have!

    Pros

With my job, I am given latitude for work/life balance. I also have great co-workers who care about the business.

    Cons

Management, from the CEO to the first line team, is extremely poor. There is no global vision - everybody does whatever they want. People skills are poor and the good ole boy network is alive and well, especially for Finnish males. Management is so busy with building their own little fiefdoms that "best for the company" gets lost.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on building global processes and then make everyone follow them so you can reduce your expenses. And make a decision and stick to it.

    Cons

management is clueless and only concerned with petty empire building and their bonus no updating of standards no use of or understanding of modern machining practices

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

clean house of vice presidents, directors, and general managers especially anyone that came over from one of the purchased companies like Dravo

    Pros

good generation of people to work with

    Cons

Upper management, very dishonest with and to employees. To work at this company in the past, it was very important who you know and not what you know to get promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees the way you would like to be treated.

Overall, a decent place to work. Some really good people to work with, and a cool industry to be a part of.

Former Employee - Engineer in San Antonio, TX

    Pros

*Cool industry and technology that you get to be a part of and develop
*Friendly and fair management (Engineering Dept)
*Some really good people to work with in other departments.
    *Excellent benefits package (2011)

    Cons

*Industry is very volatile and heavily tied to commodity pricing. Expect the good years with the bad years.
*Workload is never ending (due to the nature of the industry). Deadlines are a joke. Expect to work overtime, but for certain family needs, managers will be understanding. Travel time was not excessive (at least not in my role).
*Not much incentive in terms of pay raises/promotions. Make sure you negotiate salary up front because there won't be much increase after that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give employees real opportunities to grow and improve their economic situation so that they don't leave for better paying opportunities.
