I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital for less than a year

    Pros

Most co-workers on the unit I work are hard-working and fun to be around.

    Cons

Many are afraid to speak up against the constant understaffing and frequently being forced to take 7 to 8 patients, plus do admits and discharges. The culture appears to have turned into being expected to stay quiet and just be thankful for a job. The manager for the particular unit I work tries to bully the quiet workers, yet is overly friendly with those who flagrantly break policy. I get by ok because I speak up for myself but some don't have the confidence. HR offers NO help. Many formal complaints made about this manager by many people....yet the manager continues on. Management hides in "meetings" when days are really rough offering no communication and even less help. Sad, because I know other people who work in other areas and it is not like this everywhere throughout the hospital.

Per diem rate for nurses is currently $30. Kettering offered $32 and $34 depending on agreement over five years ago when I last worked there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you cannot change your approach and attitude with the ever changing healthcare environment, perhaps it is time for you to change your scenery. Concrete thinking, the need for power and control, dishonesty in order to make self and unit appear better and overall crass attitude lead to flow employee retention and high turnover rate. Please make note of which units this is happening on and fix the problem!!!!!

I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Outstanding coworkers, paid vacation, sick days, short term disability, can use badge to purchase items.

    Cons

    Micromanaged, bullied, not listened to

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The housekeeping director and some of the management, the worst Ive ever seen in my life. Constantly bullying and intimidating employees who speak up. Management will work you to death but refuse to pitch in to help. Constantly worrying you won't have a job. Constantly underappreciated and they have it in for anyone making more than 9 dollars an hour. Management never has your back and if you stand up for your rights, you will be bullied until you are out the door. The worst most incompetent upper management I have ever encountered at any workplace. Constantly trying to add a new angle of difficulty to your job.

I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Some amazing and knowledgeable nurses. Great opportunity to see and learn a lot. Level 1 trauma center so you see some crazy stuff.

    Cons

Very political. It's clear the company does not value their employees. Look at the multi million dollar bonuses the CEO's/presidents got in the past couple years....yet staff RN's, techs, etc haven't gotten a christmas bonus in 3 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spread the love, give your staff employees bonuses, cost of living raises, etc. You're not staying competitive with Kettering network in this regard.

    Pros

Friendly managers; I like the work; flexible schedule

    Cons

Not the best pay in the world, though better than most food service; can be stressful, department is currently understaffed. So many changes in health care right now that make me nervous about the future.
