I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital full-time

    Pros

There is teamwork, it is a learning facility with opportunities to grow, continued learning is encouraged.

    Cons

It is difficult to transfer to another unit or specialty, nurses work harder than what they get compensated for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The hourly amount that nurses get paid should be re-evaluated. There should be more incentives to keep nurses or for nurses who don't miss work because we lose some good nurses who get burnout on working so hard and many nurses never miss work but feel they aren't recognized for their commitment to their employer or co-workers.

I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The compensation is good and there is opportunity to work with committed competent professionals.

    Cons

The hospital was recently absorbed into the Premier network and some of the changes make me think the new administrators have not been in direct care in a very long time, if ever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your line staff and be more responsive to their concerns. Possibly try spending some time shadowing them to see how some of the recent changes are effecting staff and patient care if possible.

I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital (less than an year)

    Pros

Most co-workers on the unit I work are hard-working and fun to be around.

    Cons

Many are afraid to speak up against the constant understaffing and frequently being forced to take 7 to 8 patients, plus do admits and discharges. The culture appears to have turned into being expected to stay quiet and just be thankful for a job. The manager for the particular unit I work tries to bully the quiet workers, yet is overly friendly with those who flagrantly break policy. I get by ok because I speak up for myself but some don't have the confidence. HR offers NO help. Many formal complaints made about this manager by many people....yet the manager continues on. Management hides in "meetings" when days are really rough offering no communication and even less help. Sad, because I know other people who work in other areas and it is not like this everywhere throughout the hospital.

Per diem rate for nurses is currently $30. Kettering offered $32 and $34 depending on agreement over five years ago when I last worked there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you cannot change your approach and attitude with the ever changing healthcare environment, perhaps it is time for you to change your scenery. Concrete thinking, the need for power and control, dishonesty in order to make self and unit appear better and overall crass attitude lead to flow employee retention and high turnover rate. Please make note of which units this is happening on and fix the problem!!!!!

    Pros

    Not bad for Dayton, OH

    Cons

Compensation is out of alignment. Evaluations are poor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start paying people and offer better benefits. It's becoming a sorority environment and it needs new blood in the compensation department.

I worked at Miami Valley Hospital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Management always wanted to make sure that everyone was on one page. Always had classes or town hall meetings for everyone about companies.

    Cons

Opportunities for advancement very political. Cubicle atmosphere somewhat distracting. No good work/life balance. Too many Chiefs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps more training for management team and hiring more leaders/mentors that help there people excel at what they do. Stop hiring "traffic cops".
