    Student worker

    Student Assistant (Current Employee)
    East Lansing, MI

ProsGreat experience, very flexible, they value your education over your time put in work. My supervisors are very caring and polite. They do not put you down for your mistake but help you learn from them.

ConsWorking with lazy student co-workers. Not much room for growth depending on your field. Very competitive application process due to mass amount of students looking for jobs.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work. Great balance of work and studying time for their student employees.

    Good Experience, Glad It's Over

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsI held a half-time assistantship for five semesters while I earned my MA. Overall, compensation is decent--it paid for up to 9 credits per Fall/Winter semester and I think 6 in the summer; the stipend is *enough* to live on if you're careful; I've heard the insurance is great, though I didn't really use it--and the atmosphere I worked in was extremely warm and welcoming.

ConsManagement often left something to be desired. Meetings ran much longer than necessary, and I sometimes got the feeling that my bosses weren't communicating with each other very well. Also, because the positions are occupied by current students only, there's a lot of turnover and a constant need to train new people.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake it clear that our input and ideas matter--we're smart, capable people--but also provide a bit clearer goals and expectations.

    Stay Away!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsChoices of eating on campus. nice that they have a bakery, a butcher, lots of ethnic food available.

Conssupervision, illegality of procedures for hiring and firing. very caught up in their importance as a top 10 university. have lost their way. too siloed in their approach as a university.

Advice to Senior Managementchange all upper management because from midlevel to the top is corrupt

ProsFair compensation, effective supervision, great direction and leadership, good for student jobs, close to classes, easy to get time off

ConsThere is no cons that I can think of while I worked there.

    Fun work but dirty

Level Student Supervisor for Facilities (Former Employee)
    East Lansing, MI

ProsGreat Full-time staff, hard-workers, and great sense of humor

Conssome of the student staff slowly become slackers due to the fact they think it is a cushy job and that they can get away with all sorts of things.

Advice to Senior Managementlearn to employ hard working individuals, and to give bonuses and incentives to those who go above and beyond what they have to do.
