I have been working at Michigan State

    Pros

A very diverse working environment, and reasonable work load. Most important, it's a beautiful working place.

    Cons

Being a TA in the math department, you need to do free tutoring 3-4 hours every week.

I worked at Michigan State part-time

Sometimes work can be stressful and you need work around your schedule.

I worked at Michigan State part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Always room to grow, people always willing to help. A great community that has the drive to make the world a better place. Grad assistants can get their tuition paid for as well as a stipend.

    Cons

Time management, long hours, no perks for undergrads. Scheduling can sometimes be an issue due to classes, but for the most part management is easy to work with around your class schedule.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offering a a free parking permit or even one at a discount to students would be ideal, especially when many have to be on campus before the buses start to run due to early class time.

    First Job Opportunity

I have been working at Michigan State

    Pros

Michigan State is very flexible with schedules and allowing employees to take time off when needed. Each job is unique to the department and building that you work in. You also get to work with a lot of great people and, depending on your position, get to interact with the students.

    Cons

The lack of training disappointed me. Since there are a lot of unique jobs it is hard to train for them. I felt like I was thrown into the position and forced to learn on the job. It is also hard to get hired in full-time at the moment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think it would be nice to have a general training for all new empoyees

I have been working at Michigan State full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Interactions with the students and co workers.

    Cons

Management made promises that they could not keep regarding promotional opportunities. If you made a mistake management would hold it against you forever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More diversity and better management training.

I have been working at Michigan State full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexible about work schedule and very family friendly

    Cons

If you are non-tenure stream faculty in a department, treated like second-class citizen and paid very poorly, even if you hold a PhD. No career advancement for non-tenure track faculty and really very little mentoring as well: a very 'sink-or-swim' environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider talking to non-tenure stream faculty more and mentoring their careers.

    Pros

Lots of facilities, beautiful campus, supportive people, somewhat slower academic life.

    Cons

Typically lower pay in public sector. Lots of students.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most of the buildings really need to be upgraded. Needs to spend more on learning and less on football.
