I have been working at Michigan State University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Pays roughly $10/hr and is very convenient to work right on campus.

    Cons

Bigger class sizes make it tricky to get to know students, and although diversity is a great aspect of MSU, its difficult to communicate at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to keep the students in mind. The farther you get from the students, the harder it is to see it.

I worked at Michigan State University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

As a communicator I had a lot of autonomy within the college. The other communicators on campus are for the most part good colleagues. Very good work-life balance. You can grow in the job if you want to. I was able to go to training outside of the university to get the training I wanted.

    Cons

Small marketing budgets and a belief that higher education does not need to market. Higher ed also has a habit of letting faculty members behave badly and getting away with it. Most faculty are great but the few that aren't can make the work very hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Commit to funding a marketing program and not taking from that budget when something else you want to do comes along.

I worked at Michigan State University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Flexibility, good pay, fun atmosphere filled with Spartans. You get access to really cool people and places within the Spartan nation. My department (University Advancement) also paid for trips to events and meetings, which were always a blast.

    Cons

Office politics tend to get in the way of things getting done, but that's pretty much any work place.

    Pros

Great opportunities for education, awesome coworkers, and great supervisors. Being part of the university they are very flexible when it comes to scheduling around classes and activities.

    Cons

Can't really think of any cons to the company. There are many ways of improving things within if you just offer ideas up to your supervisors.
