Pros
Excellent money can be made if you hussle and are sincere with the customers.
Cons
Management can be a little hard on employess.
Advice to Senior Management
Do what is expected of you and you will be alright.
Pros
As for the Warehouse, it's mostly laid back, you can work as you see fit as long as the job gets done. Very little micro-management takes place. Supervisors and above are friendly and helpful when needed. The employee discount is excellent. It is better than any other in the retail world.
Cons
Pay kinda sucks. If you have little or no experience, expect $8/hr. Not a huge problem if you spend most of your paycheck on computer bits, because of the discount, but if you are paying bills... it's not really enough. The HQ often has poor judgement about the store and policies. From an employee that works a retail store, some of the decisions they make baffle me (and my supervisors). It's seems like they have never been in the store before when they decide on things.
Advice to Senior Management
Store management is great. HQ management needs to come into the store more before they make big decisions.
Pros
Good employee discount. Convenient location of shopping, library and other services.
Cons
Slow to adopt change, incompetence of management, nepotism, little accountability. No profit sharing, no bonus. No advancement opportunities.
Pros
-They have a good benefits package
-There is a fair Amount of opportunities for promotion (in Sales, until a certain point)
-There are lots of networking opportunities, with customers as well as other employees
Cons
-Management is VERY hit or miss (Some are great... Others are terrible)
-Long hours, with very few holidays off
-Double standards (gender wise) with treatments, taking time off, promotions, etc.
-Sales department does not get raises (commission based)
-Encouraged to push products with high margin for company (sometimes based more on margin than quality)
Advice to Senior Management
N/A
Pros
The employee discount is substantial. Just about everyone that enjoys working there enjoys it because of the discount and computers being their hobby.
Cons
Too many sales staff barking for commissions. The sales floor is flooded, absolutely flooded, with sales guys that may or may not know what the heck they are talking about. And they will get bent out of shape if you miss their commission sticker. Don't expect me, the cashier, to take extra time out searching for your sticker if you won't take extra time out to place it reasonably near a bar-code. Also the hours suck, which is true for most retail positions. You're expected to work till 10:30 or later one night (depending on when that one guy decides to leave the store) and be back the next morning at opening. And even though every schedule form I filled out from the resume to telling every manager every week that I do not work Sunday mornings, I still get scheduled Sunday mornings. No two weeks look the same. It's nuts.
Advice to Senior Management
Try for some regularity in employee scheduling. I don't mind being rescheduled every few months but never knowing when I'll be told to work and the scheduling manager never even looking at the hours I clearly said I could not work from the start is annoying.
Pros
Good environment, high technology, assisting customers looking for good stuff is especially satisfying
Cons
Boring sometimes and not much advance opportunity
Advice to Senior Management
Better to create a more friendly working place
Pros
Good pay, commissions possible, upper management knows what they are doing, ability to move positions is fairly easy if there is an opening
Cons
Some managers are clueless. They will give a customer anything, even if it breaks company policy. Customer service gets yelled at for things they dont do (but thats normal I suppose), when a bad survey is given you get written up no matter the situation
Advice to Senior Management
Follow company policies closer, treat employees more fair, dont cave in, dont freak out because a bad survey was given, find out the entire situation first
Pros
-Competitive compensation
-Competitive medical package
-Extremely interactive management team
-Clear goals (albeit inconsistent among groups at times)
-Family friendly in respect to PTO, etc.
-Generally a positive environment
-Relatively flat management hierarchy (also a con, see below)
-Many if not most employees passionate about what they do, especially in management positions
Cons
-Flat management hierarchy - little room for career advancement in most groups
-ZERO retirement security - no 401K match, no pension
-Worst corporate office building I have ever stepped foot into - Drab, brown, dark, packed full of people, cluttered, and not a single window in the building
Advice to Senior Management
Management is very much in touch with their team, this goes from the top all the way down. The organization invests in customers obsessively (this is a good thing), however investing in the morale and long-term security of their associates is lacking. Providing an environment that associates LIKE to be in would go a long way.
Pros
What better reason to be positive about one's employer when it continues to grow during an economic downturn (2008-09). Founded in 1979, MC continues to outlast its retail competitors.
After establishing one's office creditability, executive management allows freedom for creativity and flexibility. This allows for personal job satisfaction that is high on everyone's priority list.
Cons
As there exists in most mainstream employment, office pressure is present. As the company grows, office goals per desk also grows. These are sometimes over-bearing and can affect one's basic character traits. One needs to adapt to these pressures to assure job security.
Advice to Senior Management
Know when to push and when to be considerate. Showing a friendly side at the proper moment will instill more loyalty and drive for the future. Fear is not always the best motivator.
Pros
Customer Focused, Great Co Workers, Professional but Conservative Environment, Family Oriented, Fair Compensation, Finacially Sound
Cons
A very conservative mid west organization. Turn over is very low, possibly limiting HUGE career advancement anticipation
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the good work
