Current Employee – been working at MicroAire Surgical
Pros – -Small size allows involvement and exposure to all aspects of business.
-Colleagues are generally easy to work with.
-Managers are not a-holes.
-Autonomy in completing assignments and day-to-day tasks.
Cons – -High turnover of senior management.
-High rate of employee turnover and layoffs.
-Lack of communication from President. Company has goals, but no actionable strategy for getting there. Disconnect between President and workers about how to develop new products. Lack of communication and cooperation between leadership of functional departments.
-HR department stuck in high school. They have cheerleaders and trophies and sing-alongs at all-employee meetings.
-Aversion to change due to middle-management occupied by long-time employees.
-Lack of dedication to training and employee development.
Advice to Senior Management – "Let's be innovative," and "Let's grow XX% every year," are not strategies. Saying those things is not leadership. Anyone can decide they want their company to grow and be innovative. There is no shortage of companies out there that think they are innovative or think they can be innovative by saying the word "innovate" a lot.
The question is how.
Either provide visionary leadership, or provide an environment where your workers can actually have the information and resources they need to be creative and accomplish a lot. MicroAire currently has a command-and-control structure, but without the necessary vision at the top. Ideas from the bottom are ignored if they don't fit into the status quo.
Also, train your managers in management. A 2-day seminar is not training. An online course is not training. They need real training, mentorship, and development.
