Pros
Challenging work. For the semiconductor field is not overly stressfull as I have been in the industry before and this field can be very high stress. Interesting.
Cons
Expect to not get any salary increase from what you have been hired by the company. They do occaisonal market reviews, that does not compare to the true semiconductor field competition. In one word...money. In two words...money and management.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on key individuals that add value to the company and compensate them accordingly, or at least throw them a bone once in a while to satisfy that them that they are an asset to the company. As their experience grows so does their value added to the company, so if they are more valuable to the company show them that they are..
Pros
Good balance between work and personal life.
Pretty strightforward company.
Cons
Company too much focused on cost control.
Poor middle management level.
Advice to Senior Management
Review all job grades compared to actual job description responsabilities. More severe job performance evaluation.
Pros
Pays pretty well and good time off policies. Clean room environment is good to work in also.
Cons
Promotions are hard to come by and procedures are lacking.
Advice to Senior Management
People on the production floor are treated as expendable...they need to be treated with importance and respect since they are the ones pushing the wafers and making the money for the company.
Pros
Good learning of manufacturing process. Non-aggressive work culture to keep a balanced personal vs professional life. Time-off hours are liberal.
Cons
Old school mentality of the management. Recognition and appreciation is absent. Compensation is below par to the industry. Managers are not appreciative.
Advice to Senior Management
Create an open culture like the bay area.
Pros
The job has great starting salary and a very structured career development plan. Relatively good benefits with great people to work with.
Cons
The industry is kind of binding, it is hard to break out of the semiconductor industry once you stay too long in it.
Pros
Boise is a great place to live.
Micron has good pay.
Micron has a good time off policy.
Cons
Not much scope for growth.
Pros
Ther people - open atmosphere, everyone can be very visible, strong ethic of accountability and respect - though this is starting to wane.
Highly skilled technical staff with strong sense of discipline and work ethic.
People generally want to go beyond their defined responsibilities or comfort zone to "do the right thing"
Cons
Recent internal politics getting in the way of the above Pro's.
Struggling to maintain focus.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep focussed..
Maintain a strong sense of accountability.
Pros
If you are educated and from outside the U.S., Micron is ready to hire.
During good financial cycles, they pay for schooling, matching 401k contributions, and sometimes bonuses that do not require much achievement.
Benefits do include those shared by most companies these days (e.g. individual 401k contributions, health, dental,...)
Cons
Shift work is primary placement for most employees, and consists of 12 hour shifts for 3 and 4 days a week, alternating weeks and alternating day/night schedules.
Shift altering interferes with school hours at all local colleges.
I have heard parents complain of not having much time to spend with kids and family.
No onsite daycare program.
Promotion criteria is unclear and ever-changing, making advancement pathways unable to be navigated. Very low rate of promotions, and in place of promotions, they have added numerous acknowledgement/recognition programs.
Distinct seperation between Management, Engineers, Technicians, Production, and Facilities teams.
Although a first shift does exist, the group of first shift individuals is highly competitve and made up of more senior personnell from other sites with no background at the current site.
Technology mindset is stuck on memory products with no interest in being more innovative. Micron used to make a large portfolio of good products, but now have become a very unheard-of household name.
Advice to Senior Management
Move to be move innovative. Fearlessly insert new leadership with a focus on making the company successful and diverse in order to last into the future.
Pros
Peers are great and communication is very open, Environment is well kept up, Employee work ethics and dedication (Although management is working hard to crush this)
Cons
Micro Management, Internal Politics, Promotions, Raises, Pay, lack of Internal Job Opportunities...They post internal jobs but always hire the one they ask to apply so it's just for show, If oncall, time working after hours or off site not counted toward work so they require you take your vacation time if you need rest and then use it as excuse to reduce bonuses, raises, promotions, etc. Very difficult to advance within the company without knowing someone. Complete lack of trust from management. Complete lack of confidence in Management.
Advice to Senior Management
Wake up, spend less time working on ways to change the procedures. Try giving them a chance to work. Start talking to your employees (Although when I "opened up" I was transferred), and you better start recognizing employees or we are going to all start leaving like we have been. You are having a hard time finding employees because we talk and your not making this a enjoyable (or rewarding) place to work. Appleton needs to re-connect with the real employees. Not management that tells him what he wants to hear.
Pros
1) Good Learning & Development program
2) Pay slighly higher than market rate
Cons
1) Cyclical business cycle -> Hire and Fire
2) Promotion is slow
Advice to Senior Management
1) Great Leadership but just that they are in a cut-throat industry
