I worked at Micron Technology full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

OK pay- not good - just OK if you know how to negotiate for it, great benefits, good co-workers. 12 hour shifts mean nice long weekends.

    Cons

Certain managers are oppressive, vindictive liars who engineer employee failure to make themselves look better. Rotating night/day shifts are very hard on employee morale and production efficiency. Micron likes to make low-ball offers to new prospective hires from outside the local area, claiming that 'Idaho cost of living is really low', which was a total fabrication, so be sure to compare your area's cost of living index against Boise's when considering a position here. For the past several years, Micron has been seeking to reduce costs by getting rid of experienced technicians and hiring new, cheap techs instead. Really sucks if you're the experienced guy or gal, maybe getting close to retirement, and Micron throws you out the door to save themselves a few bucks. They also periodically declare 'financial emergencies' and require employees to work unpaid overtime to 'save the company'. Management encourages devious work practices to attempt to maximize short-term profits where they should be working to operate in an ethical, legal, and honest manner to ensure long-term growth and profitability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start operating legally and morally instead of pushing the limits of what's right. Give employees a way to address problems with managers and give HR some teeth and the responsibility to uphold moral standards of business practice.

I worked at Micron Technology full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

In a state saturated with acronym soup (government contracting and software development), this manufacturing facility is a rare find. Technicians walk around in hard hats and clean room gowns; machine components sit half-constructed on desks; people actually build real technology - not all that bland, virtual crap that passes these days for engineering.

People there are enthusiastic about what they build, and it was a pleasure being a tech writer at such a company.

    Cons

Maybe this is part of working in manufacturing, but there's a definite resistance to doing anything differently. Tribal knowledge makes change frustrating. Also, the cyclical nature of the industry means occasional forced vacations or layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

White collar workers don't and shouldn't subscribe to the same shift mindset as the clean room. Our work is qualitative and our productivity is rarely flat enough to measure in cycle time.

    Pros

Work/life balance is good, company growth rate has recently been great and is expected to continue.
    Wide portfolio of memory products.

    Cons

It still needs to establish itself in the NAND market which is critical for future growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on improving Micron's position in the NAND market.

I worked at Micron Technology full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The pay is pretty good and the benefits are great. A good company for somebody just getting out of school and wanting experience in a Technology Company.

    Cons

However, unless you work in Boise there is not a clear path for promotions. Company is very backwards and conservative. No telecomuting and management expects you to take all conference calls in the office. This can be hard to balance with family as you will have meetings with multiple time zones. Growth is in Boise NOT in Folsom.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more flexible and look to promote from your current employee base.

I have been working at Micron Technology full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Big enough to move around in and the technology is varied enough to stay interesting

    Cons

Top heavy in certain areas who's only job seems to be making their section of the org chart more impressive than their peers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop acquiring management who seem to only care about jockeying for position on the org chart relative to the other management instead of caring for what's best for the company

I have been working at Micron Technology full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Has provided steady employment. I enjoy the people I work with.

    Cons

Culture has changed to managing resources (people) through more frequent layoffs. Lack of advancement or pay increases because economy is bad. Once economy began to return still no advancement or pay increases. Pay across U.S. and international sites is not the same for the same or similar jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensation for the work done needs to be similar across sites. There needs to be some way to determine pay scale by skills and ability. There is too much subjective criteria in the Performance Appraisal system. There needs to be more skill and ability based criteria in Performance Appraisals.

I have been working at Micron Technology full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The purchase of Elpida was brilliant, and they are good at new technology (although frequently lagging competitors). Compensation is good. Opportunities for advancement are good, as is compensation, and tuition reimbursement.

    Cons

Health insurance for specialists is limited to very few providers, and in come cases, no local provider.
Over the several years, Micron seems to care less and less about their employees. Top management appears to have hired business consultants and have launched crazy internal programs. Environment is too rushed to have a good culture. Internal feedback does not seem to be considered to a great degree. Break room perks are minimal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your employees.
