I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    1. Pay/Perks - good base pay along with tons of other benefits.
    2. Work culture - Apart from WLB, the culture is great.
    3. People - Someone rightly said, company is made with people.
    4. Internal job opportunities - you name the role you want to do and there should be something within company.

    Cons

    1. Sometimes the work we do becomes monotonous. We need to take care of same (discussing with manager about the RnR)
    2. Changing roles is still bit difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Make the role change easier.

--HR policies are friendly but managers rule.
    --Stocks
--Surrounded by talented people but no recruits from premium institutes like Microsoft in 90's
--Steve ballmer was a great CEO but not sure about current CEO leadership.
--Cutting edge products that change life of millions.
    --Benefits are standard.
    --Commute facility.
    --Technical Training.
    --Team outing.
    --Events like hackathon/code jams
    --TechFest.

    Cons

--Politics are everywhere but microsoft breeds on it.
    --Vacation policy are not competitive.
--Not great pay master any more.
--Company is focussing on all business and trying to establish. Lack of focus and be good at company's strengths.
    --Hire and Fire policy.
--Moving across teams next to impossible unless you are working under a generous manager.
--Work Life balance is not good.
    --Quality of recruits not great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

--Reduce contractors or hire contractors with good tech know-how.
--Focus on strengths and core products.
--Burning midnight oil doesn't guarantee success.

Current Employee - Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) II in Hyderābād (India)

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

If someone can fool management (which is easy) then that person can enjoy luxury, good pay and perks without any effort.
Promotions depends on your relationship with your manager and his/her peers. Persons capability is given relatively less weight.
Personal growth will be good if a person manages relationship and be yes boss always. The moment person gets into discussion mode growth stops. And mostly you will be forced to leave company.
Personal growth in comparison to external skills will be Zero.

    Cons

Office Vulture is pathetic specially for lateral hires.
No one wants to learn from other.
    Every department is re-inventing wheel.
    No good/bad practice sharing.
Decisions/processes made/change without looking at good/bad experiences of people working on ground.
Copy cat mentality. Senior management always talks about changes as competitors are doing instead of innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be open for suggestions instead of considering person your enemy.
Create plan to ease on-boarding of lateral hires instead of telling them that Microsoft culture is difficult to adapt for initial 2 years.
Create culture of innovation via projects instead of forced innovations through forced participation.
Look how industry is using your products. People are using your products in much much better way then MS itself.
