Current Employee – been working at Middle Tennessee State University part-time for less than a year
Pros – Passionate and devoted people: the academia contains some very talented educators.
Cons – Very few innovators, old facilities. Most departments have stayed the same for years.

Current Employee – been working at Middle Tennessee State University full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – good health insurance options, vacation and sick leave, atmosphere was wonderful, when I arrived-felt i made a difference, now a cog in a machine. I have many genuinely dedicated coworkers and there are some incredibly gifted professors and amazing students. Its fun to see students enthusiam and the odds some students face to succeed are amazing.
Cons – has lost sense of purpose, "student centered" a shallow version of customer service rather than genuine sense of mentoring, stretching, and building young minds and character. Also employee morale is very low because the job you hire on for mutates unendingly and then rather than affirming flexibility and willingness to go the extra mile there is an uspoken "20 people want your job" pressure. To some degree this depends on your department and immediate supervisor but there is an overall malaise.
Advice to Senior Management – treat your staff with more respect--if you want to "sell" a degree, then treat your professional staff professionally-listen and trust and don't expect them to stay seated whereever you put them on the bus, especially if you hijack the bus to a different destination. There are many ways to build morale besides a paycheck when times are tough.

Former Employee – worked at Middle Tennessee State University
Pros – I was a student worker in an academic office at MTSU. The staff was great - really flexible with my class schedule and also helpful when it came time to choose classes for my minor. I also got the opportunity to get to know my professors much better as I was seeing them 3 - 4 times a week outside of the classroom.
Cons – A couple of the professors complained about their students a lot. It was a little frustrating to hear that much negativity.
Advice to Senior Management – Try to keep students in the same position for the duration of their education. It just helps us build relationships that can be very valuable when it comes time for us to apply to "real world" jobs.

Former Employee – worked at Middle Tennessee State University
Pros – Pays completely for school while in assistantship. You only work 20 hrs week. You get off work for all the holidays the school recognizes. $800 month pay.
Cons – Nepotism allowed to occur. Little to no feedback from management. No feedback on work done well or correctly. Little instruction in how to correctly conduct work.
Advice to Senior Management – Management should work on treating the graduate assistants better. They are here to help but also to learn. Give them both positive and constructive feedback on the job they are doing. Just because they are gone in two years doesn't mean you shouldn't invest in them personally.
