Millennium Pharmaceuticals Anonymous in Cambridge, MA:   (Past Employee - 2009)

Pros

A lot of fun. People are serious about work life balance. There are monthly WHIPs, many fun department activities. It is truly a great environment and employees here have a lot of energy.

Cons

One of the most common complaints is too much free food. Not the most diet friendly place. However, the company does offer weight loss groups and yoga classes.

Advice to Senior Management

none.

Millennium Pharmaceuticals Senior Manager in Cambridge, MA:   (Current Employee)

Pros

The best reasons to work for Millennium are the people and the flexibility in work arrangements. The benefits are good and it's a very family oriented company. Many people take advantage of the flexible work arrangements (part time work or job sharing) to give them more time with their families. Millennium also is flexible when it comes to working at home so that you can care for a sick family member. There are also several child care benefits to find emergency daycare as needed. Millennium offers saving for college planning programs, and other benefits as well.

Cons

A lack of interaction between departments and business units can cause it to feel like you're working for a smaller and separate company. This is both good and bad.
Salaries, while good, need to stay competitive with the surrounding businesses. This is an on-going problem in Cambridge for all companies. It can be hard to hire competitively.

Advice to Senior Management

Focus on unity and salaries.

Millennium Pharmaceuticals CRA in Cambridge, MA:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Millennium is a very employee driven company that works to keep its employees happy. They treat their employees like adults, which seems to be a rarity in this day in age. Communication from Senior management all the way down is very open, with most, if not all managers having an open door policy. Millennium strives to meet the annual goals and is focused on helping patients with Cancer, not solely on the bottom line.

Cons

The recent aquisition of Millennium by Takeda has left a lot of questions in the company for employees and the what next in relation to jobs, benefits etc.

Advice to Senior Management

Keep on doing what you're doing

Millennium Pharmaceuticals Scientist in Cambridge, MA:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

Location is good, you join into a large network of people when you are laid off because of Millennium's large turnover rate. There are some good scientists, but the baffling decisions made by upper management and the constant course changes and reorganizations makes Millennium a frustrating place to get your work done. They have never developed their own drugs, the only reason they make money is because they bought Velcade from a smaller company. Recently they were purchased by a Japanese company and stopped giving out stock incentives, so don't expect anything beyond salary at Millennium.

Cons

Management is terrible - the worst I've seen in industry.

Advice to Senior Management

Do your jobs - think about the people working hard for you.

Millennium Pharmaceuticals Senior Scientist in Cambridge, MA:   (Past Employee - 2007)

Pros

Caliber of people. Good scientific informatics systems. Open corporate culture. Big enough to have sufficient resources and established infrastructure, small enough so that the company was not bloated with inefficient policies and the need to have disparate groups aligned in order to move forward with projects.

Cons

Company grew too fast, large layoffs were inevitable. Company was starting to adopt big pharma policies when the company is still mid-sized (e.g. locked down desktops), feeling of "nimble" startup was eroding. This may accelerate now that they have been acquired by Takeda.

Advice to Senior Management

Try to maintain the exciting small company work environment.
