I have been working at Miller Thomson full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - The support staff in the various departments (i.e. IT, reception, marketing, office services, hostessing, doc_pro, etc.) are very collegial and understand the true meaning of "team work". They will pitch in to help each other out.
    - Average benefits.

    Cons

    - Low Compensation
    - High Turnover, No job security
    - Low Morale
    - Poor bonuses (ranges from $120 - $700) depending on tenure.
    - Long Hours (to claim overtime you have to fight for it even though it's your right). We have one of the largest Labour and Employment practices in Canada, and still HR will fight you on your right to claim over time). It's disgusting.
    - Miller Thomson's way of recognizing their employees for their successes and hard work is through a useless recognition program called "the Plus is You". How about paying your employees more and giving them proper raises during performance reviews.
    - Worst HR department I have ever heard of/encountered. HR is supposed to fight for the rights of the company's employees. But they don't stick up for their staff and throw hardworking employees under the bus when the going gets tough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Respect the staff and value their hard work. A lot of overtime goes into making our lawyers look good...Lawyers don't think twice as long as the work gets done. When you bring it up to HR for overtime they tell you to speak to your direct report... and when you have your direct report backing you up, HR finds another way to get out of paying you what is rightfully yours.
    - Re-evaluate the benefits your HR team brings to your company. Specifically the Toronto Office.
    - Hire more support staff. From the sounds of it this company is doing just fine (well at least that is what the partners keep saying), if that's the case, stop cutting back on support staff and start hiring the people you need to keep this company going. Everyone is overworked and unhappy.

    Pros

Pay is a little higher than average for same job at non-professional services company. Support staff employees are very nice.

    Cons

I have been working at Miller Thomson full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Widespread presence across Canada, with opportunity to relocate. Very strong team relationships and staff are treated very well. Salary and benefits are competitive. Many long term lawyers and staff.

    Cons

Productivity is a huge focus, as with any law firm. Good work can be taken for granted at times. Direct support is good, but other administrative can be a bit bureaucratic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on more frequent communications and two-way dialog to ensure everyone is following where you are leading.
