    Pros

Great pay and decent benefits. Lots of really great people work in public service.

    Cons

    Pros

can be stable employment if you are under skilled or under qualified.

    Cons

Even the County Supervisors like to say, "We're not like the private sector". Absolutely they are not because in the private sector they would be out of business in 18 months! The current government and union (even if it is residual with the passing of Act 10) protect the steritypical lazy, listless government workers. Employees basically fall into one of two camps - newer employees who can't stand the enabling culture and worsening pay; or the employees who have been ther forever and have adopted an juvenile mentality and believe the County owes them $20 an hour to sit on their behinds and gossip. Unfortunately, they have been around long enough and protected by the system that they are going to stay and make it miserable for those people who do want to effect a change. This is what golden handcuffs do. To stay you either have to check out in your head or vote with your feet and move on. The County sucks the life out of you. Pay has been frozen for more than 5 years, so ask for top dollar before you agree to go on board. They won't tell you the part about salaries until after you start. If you want to work with people who don't give a damn and who will gossip like they are Payton Place wives, this is the place for you. If you want to work somewhere that your efforts count (including financially), look elsewhere.

    Pros

Decent wage at some levels Competitive benefits Job security

    Cons

Regular wage freezes and adjustments to written rules so that those wage freezes can be implemented No employee recognition No strong vision and leadership is not united EVERYTHING is political Paying for benefits for wages that are not competitive with the private sector in many cases Difficult to advance as limited job openings that are not specialized

    Advice to Management

Read the ordinances that dictate how your local government should operate and actually follow them. Stop the nepotism.

I worked at Milwaukee County full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great insurance, but very costly, Other benefits like a pension were nice but added to the deductions from my bi weekly paycheck..... There was plenty of down time were you could goof off and take a walk or something.

    Cons

...Actually so much so that I was making only $750 every two weeks! The hours were kind of long, I know 9 hours isn't long but a mandatory 1 hour unpaid lunch is kind of ridiculous. I would have rather just went home an hour early seeing as how you could just eat at your desk anyway....

    Advice to Management

The management was good but at some times kind of one sided and really only benefited the people they were close to or friends with.
