I worked at Milwaukee County full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great insurance, but very costly, Other benefits like a pension were nice but added to the deductions from my bi weekly paycheck..... There was plenty of down time were you could goof off and take a walk or something.

    Cons

...Actually so much so that I was making only $750 every two weeks! The hours were kind of long, I know 9 hours isn't long but a mandatory 1 hour unpaid lunch is kind of ridiculous. I would have rather just went home an hour early seeing as how you could just eat at your desk anyway....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management was good but at some times kind of one sided and really only benefited the people they were close to or friends with.

Great for Entry Level Work ...Cronyism Prohibits Employee Growth & Morale

I have been working at Milwaukee County full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great job for entry level workers.

    Cons

It is very TOUGH to advance here. As with most businesses, in order to get a promotion you need to be best friends with management or know someone who is. Benefits are competitive compared to private sector costs, but are increasingly high with each passing year. Nearly everyone except high level management is underpaid and overworked. Worker morale is low due to low pay and increasing demands. In this age of economic turmoil you have to count your blessings in even having a job, but there definitely needs to be reform.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management, and by that I mean those above low level Supervisors, know exactly what is going on, thus the status quo. With no real union power workers are at the mercy of those at the top of the food chain.

I have been working at Milwaukee County full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work in unique and varied areas (mental health, jails, parks, courthouse, etc.) Flexible work schedule, but this may not apply to many/most departments. I have a pretty decent operating budget to work with, but capital funding is a huge challenge.

    Cons

Terrible leadership, no long term planning. A few bad apples that do things the "County" way and refuse to adapt or even do their job at a basic level. Lack of capital investment countywide is causing noticeable problems. Some buildings are in terrible repair.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set plans and execute on them. Increase capital investment.

I worked at Milwaukee County as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Extremely hands off management gave me a lot of independence to conduct my own projects. I pretty much set my own schedule, which was nice too. If you are an extremely independent worker and willing to work for free for a resume builder, this would be a barely decent internship. If you are not, don't bother.

    Cons

Our office was so broke that full time staff members borrowed supplies I brought into work, like binders and notebooks (I was an unpaid intern). Yet they also made poor hiring decisions, so I think that affected the office budget. The biggest problem was the huge culture of secrecy and petty gossip. I was mostly ignored and left to do my own work, which could be frustrating with no one to check in with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I've never been at an organization that is so weird and sneaky with its own staff. Several people were hired and even FIRED with none of the staff being aware. Transparency is key!

Also, make a budget for office supplies and focus on the budget/transportation and less on the gossip.

I have been working at Milwaukee County full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn and develop many skills

    Cons

Few opportunities to grow beyond current positioning. Because everything is based on seniority, people who have worked longer get advanced, rather than the best performers.
    Low pay.
    Diminishing benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change up some civil service laws, change the culture of fear. Pay more. Don't cut the benefits every time you come short on money, is not the employees' fault, yet they bear the cost.

I worked at Milwaukee County full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Decent pay, good benefits and PTO

    Cons

Majority of employees are only there for the paycheck and hate coming to work everyday. Old bureaucratic structure favors those with seniority, so it doesn't matter how well you do your job and new ideas go nowhere.

    Pros

Few and far between. Underpaid so much consider your time a donation to the community.

    Cons

Low wages, pay freeze since 2010, pension contributions, no hope for promotion, no incentive for job performance, under educated unmotivated coworkers, management and elected officials on vacation more often than at work, etc...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    File for bankruptcy and dissolve.
