I have been working at Milwaukee full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

A very secure job to have with affordable benefits.
Aside from crazy circumstances, work-life balance is not difficult as leadership will do what they can to accommodate requests for needed time off.

    Cons

Motivation seems almost frowned upon so it can be difficult to get employees on task at a moment's notice. This then breeds the reactive over proactive nature that is commonplace, compounding the issue. The attitude seems to be, "Well it's a city job, what do you expect?".

Room for individual growth is scarce - this may be the reason why motivation is, too.

If you're a high output person you'll be frustrated here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open up more room for individual training and explore more modern employee retention options. Pensions aren't reason enough to stay nowadays, at best it makes employees with longer tenures feel trapped. In modern society fewer people are relying on a pension so it's not a sustainable retention strategy. Supporting individual growth is, however, it's also something that the company can't put a price on if the individual stays and applies his/her new skills within the company. Tuition reimbursement needs improvement, maybe just in the form of outreach and encouragement to use it. If advanced training were offered within the company it might make up for this low reimbursement rate; not to mention being highly appreciated by the employees.

    Pros

A lot of freedom to manage work scope. Great opportunity to take leadership roles in assignments and other intern roles.

    Cons

City budgetary and other restrictions hurt progress- old equipment, software, and systems require learning backwards.

The MFD, our Chief will cut as many firefighters as it takes to ensure his continued position.

I have been working at Milwaukee

    Pros

My co-workers are top notch. The work hours allow for a full off duty lifestyle. Serving the community is extremely rewarding. Not many people get to have an effect on the community like a Firefighter. You truly do save lives on a regular basis and nothing is more rewarding than that.

    Cons

The Chief is completely out of touch with his departments needs and more interested in his political goals. It is difficult to watch a very good Fire Department slowly being picked apart by constant staffing cuts. The services we are able to provide are continually being diminished, yet our senior management refuses to make a stand against the politicians. The safety of the citizens and the firefighters is being but in jeopardy.

City of Milwaukee employees are forced to live in the city of Milwaukee.
