I worked at MiraCosta College part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The MiraCosta staff cared about the students ... both matriculating junior college students and returning students who may or may not be pursuing one of their degrees. The variety of degree programs seems to be good and there was diverse offerings.

    Cons

Normal drawbacks of a local community college means that number of classes are limited. Also, if there was a particular portion of the program that interested you, there might not be advanced classes to satisfy that quest for knowledge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

MiraCosta College provides a good opportunity for locals to start or continue their education. I enjoyed my experience there and felt as though it was worthwhile.

    Not sure what to say

    I worked at MiraCosta College

    Pros

Co- workers, happy children, ways to get paid a little more

    Cons

New rules in place- must be a full time student, less hours. I worked at the child center for several years and now with the new rules I am forced to leave. All that will be left working there is 18 year olds with no experience. I hope parents know this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Favoritism is so high it's not even funny.... Let's make a person with little experience with children a lead teacher because she was a nanny to my kids and a huge suck up- No one liked working with

    Pros

Great Summer Job it allows you to gain great customer service experience. This job also allowed me to realize what a real 40 hour a week job really was like. Also it allowed me to have a good paying job with the experiences that I actually had.

    Cons

The job is only seasonal and the only way to move up is to have a masters degree that allows you to be the supervisors of the camp. Also the job would be very challenging at times, but sometime the job was very boring and was not exciting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To actually look at the personnel they have and realize that there are different levels of talent in their employees.

Best pay for adjunct instructors in SoCal; little to no support from full-time faculty and dept chairs

I worked at MiraCosta College part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

In one word: money! If you are adjuncting, you cannot beat the pay. They are current on their technology and you have access to various teaching modalities - all which can help your overall instruction and potential advancement.
The student population is comprised of mostly hard-working, capable individuals and it was a pleasure to interact with them.

    Cons

I found a lack of support, comraderie, and overall friendliness from their full-time professors. If you are an adjunct there, you are definitely a second class citizen. They also relied heavily on student evaluations when any seasoned instructor knows these are often not an adequate portrayal of a teacher's strengths and weaknesses, but more of a reflection of the writer's performance in the class. That is to say, students earning high grades tend to ascribe more favorable traits to their professor than students who are not achieving high marks.

I have been working at MiraCosta College

    Pros

Chair of Department and Administrative always very helpful

Former Employee - Computer/Java Lab Aide in Oceanside, CA

I worked at MiraCosta College part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Work hours are not bad, and the job is not stressful. You usually work with a handful of coworkers with shared responsibility. Being a Java lab aide is good since you can do more than just help with general computer questions. Also, if you're a student, you can do homework when there isn't much to do.

    Cons

Work there is reinforcing of prior knowledge, but not too challenging.
