I worked at Mississippi State University part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Enjoyed working with the people in my office. Somewhat relaxed dress code for students. Adjustable schedule so you can work around your classes.

    Cons

Only allowed to work 20 hours a week so I had to get a second job to pay for apartment and tuition, which defeats the purpose of only allowing 20 hours so you can focus the rest on classes. No pay raise after working there for 5 years.

    Advice to Management

Allow more hours to those who request it and can maintain a good GPA. Offer a pay raise after someone has worked there for like three years.

I have been working at Mississippi State University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Experience for communications majors. Easy, laid back atmosphere. I worked the front desk and was able to do homework and study when nothing was going on.

    Cons

Can get slow at times and you don't get a lot of hours ( ~10-12/week). Other than that the hardest part of the job is figuring out you're going to watch on Netflix next.

I have been working at Mississippi State University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Treated with respect and works well with graduate students' course schedule.

    Cons

No cons, great place for a GA. 20 hours a week $1200 per month and all but less than 1K of tuition and fees covered by school.

    Advice to Management

Nothing but good things to say.

I worked at Mississippi State University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people, great work-life balance, time off is good, great benefits, especially if you're willing to make a 20+ year career out of it. Great place to be a Bulldog. Opportunities to increase your experience, attend conferences, continuing education. 50% tuition breaks for your kids. (If you and your spouse both work at MSU, your kids' tuition at least is essentially free.)

    Cons

Pay isn't comparable to private sector. State retirement plan participation is mandatory, and takes a fairly big bite out of your paycheck. Presumably it pays off when you get older and/or retire. Biggest problem I had was the glacial pace of progress. Interesting projects would get off the ground, but upper management interests would change, and those interesting projects would get put on the back burner or worse, forgotten and abandoned.

    Advice to Management

Compensation for such specialized experience really should come closer to the private sector, if you want to retain top talent. When your best and brightest have great ideas, they should be nurtured and encouraged.

    Pros

Reasonable support for employees seeking to further their education. Good leave accrual rates. Excellent opportunities/campus activities for employees with families.

    Cons

Some obvious and necessary program changes should be made in the interest of students, but leadership is reluctant /slow to implement changes. Lacks communication between related departments. Reorganization should be considered to form more well-supported units.

I have been working at Mississippi State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Support and challenge offered. Room for creativity and trying out new things, even if it costs money.

    Cons

A lot of responsibility for someone still in graduate school full time.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing!
