I have been working at Missouri State University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The English department has incredible faculty that guide you through your two years of teaching. The office atmosphere with the other teaching assistants can't really be rivaled, especially with the friendships that develop as well as the professional development opportunities.

    Cons

Even though the pay for this position includes a tuition waiver, the salary was barely enough to get by. It was also hard to balance teaching responsibilities (grading, teaching, conferences) with my own class responsibilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The only advice I would give is to pay your TAs more. The culture is great, training is helpful, and continued professional development opportunities are plentiful.

    Pros

You can set your own hours, very flexible. You are able to work on school work if you are not busy.

    Cons

They give you a stipend every month, which is great, but it can be pretty tough to make the amount last over the entire month.

I have been working at Missouri State University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

MSU had provided such a great opportunity to graduates with an interest in working in the university setting. Being a GA brings opportunities for a diverse work experience and additional study. Management, at least within my departments, has been exemplary and helpful throughout this process.

    Cons

As great as the university is, the city (Springfield, MO) might lack a good deal of essential amenities for those accustomed to living in larger cities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As is true with any university, being able to provide for more instructor lines rather than relying on so many adjunct (per-course) faculty may be beneficial to the university in the long run.

I worked at Missouri State University full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Missouri State University is a great employer, they had great benefits and the 2nd shift was a great shift to work. The student workers were pleasant and hard working and the Director of User Support was also a great boss and the teachers were for the most part quick to learn the technology

    Cons

Working projects while supporting teachers was a tighter fit for fitting into the standard work week and there was not always a even distribution of tickets across the shifts (but this is not due to the managers but other shift workers).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to invest in the students and employees, and work with Provost to keep money in the budget.
