Challenging place to work, with a number of issues making a career there unlikely

I worked at Momentive Performance Materials full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Select staff are terrific. Diverse issues and large plant make getting a varied work experience easy. Interesting product line.

    Cons

Leadership has no clear vision. Antiquated plant needs cash infusion that will never come. Incompetence is rewarded, hard work is scrutinized and rejected. Safety is only important on the surface - leadership is clueless how to institute a robust safety program. Union members languish over issues from the past.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look for real improvements that will rejuvenate the business and allow it to compete long term. Eliminate the managers who don't know what they are talking about. Audit ethics compliance, don't just send out memos reminding staff of the requirements. You'll be surprised by what you might find.

I have been working at Momentive Performance Materials as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I've gotten great experience so far at momentive. The office culture has contributed signifcantly to my reasons for enjoying my time so far. Lots of hands on work for an internship and great exposure to the specific department that you get placed in.

    Cons

    Needs more formal training sessions.

Fun place to work, good learning experience, but most are overworked and underpaid

I worked at Momentive Performance Materials full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A lot of the teams and employees are great to work with, get on their good side and they will do anything for you. Not super professional environment so make sure you have a good sense of humor. Tons to learn and lots of opportunities to make improvements. Opportunities for advancement, but the process takes longer than it used to.

    Cons

Bad labor relations, constant threats of strikes, etc. Low pay, long hours. Company not willing to spend money on projects or on its employees. Apollo management bled them dry, hopefully they get bought out by someone who wants to run a chemical company, not an investment portfolio.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve relations with the union, figure out your finances, and show more appreciation for your employees.

I worked at Momentive Performance Materials full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Every employee I worked with was intelligent, hard working and cared about his or her job performance. Most (non-represented) employees are given a "long leash" to learn and grow professionally.

    Cons

Due to the high debt it's carrying, the company is headed for bankruptcy. This means few raises and even fewer opportunities internally for growth. Most employees work long hours. The company talks about employees achieving a Work-Life Balance but it's just talk. The company is so large that "the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing" (poor internal communication). No training department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

TEAMWORK is key. Share goals with your teams. Work together. Communicate more internally.

    Pros

Was close to home that's about it.

    Cons

To many clueless Managers running the plant . EHS leadership is a joke. Everyone is running scared and the decision making shows it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no advice because Management thinks they are above everyone and better. I guess that's why GE left them there. The cream of the crop in there own minds.

    Pros

Been here long time...may as well enjoy the ride until the ship sinks!

    Cons

It's like a body on life support..we keep pumping the heart to circulate blood and make sure it's getting an adequate amount of O2 ...but there's still no brain function.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the fat...This place saw double digit growth with a hundred less leaders. You created a training department more dysfunctional than the public school system. Return to real on the floor leadership. You can't run a chemical plant from a fancy office. Our safety deptment is run like a gameshow while the safety violations go ignored.

Insular history as BU at GE; and lack of creative, strategic leadership, but things are slowly changing

I have been working at Momentive Performance Materials as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Global footprint. Highly educated, smart, hardworking employees. Backing from a large PE company, until eventual IPO. Flexible schedule: employees are allowed to work at home some of the time.

    Cons

Demoralized by corporate reorganization and less than forecasted financial performance. Reducing the workforce is never fun. Quiet office, can have an uptight, politically correct, corporate vibe.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wherever possible, reduce bureaucracy. Develop more creative, strategic leaders, plans.

Great business space but some of the worst leadership behvavior I've ever seen - just terrible

I worked at Momentive Performance Materials

    Pros

there a lot of talented people in all functions and many levels who are cooperative and great to work with as well as the space is very interesting to technical people in specialty chemical field. Product develpers will enjoy a diverse and great set of equally talented customers.

    Cons

This company has some of the most arrogant and self adsorbed leadership I've ever seen. A few are out right verbal bullies to their peers, teams and others around them. While there are a few really sharp and talented leaders most are extremely weak and back fight with each other often and in public view of the employees. The are smart enough but so focused on themeselves that it negatively impacts team performance broadly. The facilities are old and tired and need serious upgrades especially waterford site. Safety performance is not outstanding by any measure though measure were being taken to improve. Not a leader in the market space with but a few exceptions. Often under re-organization. Maybe 4 times over 5 year span. Moral is generally poor but is site dependent. Not a healthy work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management team, when you so clearly demonstrate that you care more about your personal status and pay position then about your employees and customers you missed the boat and are no longer leading. it's not about you. Change your behavior or stand down and let somebody else lead. You can find a role you are more better suited for and get professional training in leadership.
