I have been working at Monash University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The University is in the forefront of research in many fields, eg medicine, engineering. Plenty of opportunities to contribute to knowledge that can potentially make a difference in the world, while at the same time furthering your career and reputation.
Many opportunities in support positions eg, laboratory, IT, admin. There's always something new to get to grips with. Lots of free lunchtime seminars by research students and academics will keep you constantly learning new things.
Employees are offered time off for fully paid training courses to further their job skills.

    Cons

The pressure to publish. Pressure to gain research grants. There is huge competition to gain a share of the limited government research budgets. Putting together a winning application will take weeks of work.
For support staff there's the pressure to do everything but never enough staff to do it.
At the "bottom of the ladder" there are the cleaning and maintenance staff. Most are part-time, under-paid out-sourced or invisible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We are giving serious consideration to the idea of adding hidden transducers to make "ping" sounds along with coloured lights and perhaps flasks of coloured liquid. Maybe this will convince you lot that there is "real" research going on here and that some more staff would be helpful.

I have been working at Monash University

    Pros

Excellent culture dedicated to fostering good science

    Cons

Short term focus hinders foreign employees from establishing permanent research groups. Difficult for non-Australians to realistically remain at Monash for the long term.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please consider supporting longer term contract awards and offsetting employee costs for permanent residency.
