    Pros

The University is growing and expanding and it seems like an exciting place to be involved in.

    Cons

There is no real career plan for contract staff. It just depends if there is a project or money available. There is also no proper appraisal for contract staff either.

    Advice to Management

There are more and more contract staff these days and the university should have a better plan in managing contract staff and planning their career paths. As much as the contract staff is at the mercy of the organization because they are on contract only, such a treatment can also lead the staff to not put in their whole effort as they are seen as dispensable. Proper appraisal and career planning should be provided for contract staff as well and I believe it will only benefit the University for doing so.

    Pros

Work-life balance. Longer lunch hour. Above average salary.

    Cons

No opportunity for overtime. Paying for parking to work outer suburbs. Post huge profits but still make staff redundant.

    Pros

Family friendly (but depends on your department/faculty), not hard to stand out from the crowd if you are talented, Clayon campus has great community atmosphere, interesting work, opportunity to get involved in projects.

    Cons

Pass the buck mentality within many areas of the university, lots of people who do the bare minimum and never put their hand up for additional responsibility, university could afford to be a lot more efficient and trim the fat, senior management should rely on their high performing staff more and consultants less (lots of $ wasted on consulting). Terrible IT area - never wants to commit to anything.

    Advice to Management

Shake up your IT area - in over 10 years at Monash they have offered their assistance many times - but have done nothing to support our department. Lots of senior management within IT - but not enough staff to do the work that needs to be done. Very slow, bureaucratic and resistant to work.

    Pros

Great colleagues and understanding superiors. I always feel comfortable asking a question about something I am not sure about or raising an issue. I feel like I am gaining valuable experience through my work.

    Cons

It is difficult to budget while doing sessional contracts. I am told that the pay for sessional work is higher to reflect that, it would still be nice if there were year-round opportunities. It is also difficult and expensive to park on campus.

    Advice to Management

It would be great if sessional staff were provided access to other sessional opportunities during non-teaching weeks. I am aware that we can access the careers portal, but there is not much there. A mailing list would be awesome. Would also appreciate cheaper staff parking.

    Pros

The best reason to work at Monash University is the relaxed and friendly environment which not only offers but encourages professional development. Management is very accomodating and understanding of personal and family needs and this results in staff working hard to meet work requirements and deadlines. There is a good balance of professionalism and social activities and opportunities for promotion and role and career diversity are available. Health and well being of staff is considered the top priority!

    Cons

The only downside I have of working at Monash University is the 45 - 60 minute drive through city traffic to get to work but with the excellent IT service and remote access avaialble there is the option to work for home when necessary.

    Advice to Management

Continue to keep the well being of of staff the top priority!
