    Pros

You get to work with a complex and growing technology and vast array of clients. Your next job after MongoDB is virtually guaranteed. Between your client list and the people you meet at conferences a year here is a ticket to anywhere.

    Cons

A year here may indeed lead to a ticket to somewhere else. MongoDB has a very demanding culture and is really looking for "Google-caliber" brains. The problem is, their comp package is nowhere close to Google and others. After recent valuations, new options packages are going to be very low value, they are well past "startup" phase.

The biggest challenge with MongoDB is actually the CTO. Despite its popularity, the MongoDB code is really sloppy and suffers from some poor technical decisions that may haunt it forever.

If you're an engineer, your inevitable job is to support the product. That means providing support for the sloppy, undocumented code and the poor technical decisions. This makes the job extremely difficult.

    Pros

The product is loved by users all over the world. It is incredibly powerful, yet simple. The people there are really great - very caring.

    Cons

The upper management on the tech side have a lot to be desired. They are incredibly smart, but have absolutely 0 people skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to act more like a management team by helping and guiding people. Listen to what they have to say, even if you do not agree.

I worked at MongoDB full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

exciting technology, great, smart employees who are fun to work with. people work hard but can still have lives. good office space. they're going places.

    Cons

this isn't the place to work if you want extravagant perks like facebook and google have. growing fast so some things aren't organized yet, but that will come with time. hopefully they develop some of the great people from within and allow ways to advance, but i'm not confident that will happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

talented people will leave if they can't advance.Morale suffers when people who look great on paper but don't get the product or the company get hired into important positions. substance over style. don't be stingy.

I have been working at MongoDB full-time

    Pros

Really cool technology that customers/users love.

Staff is smart, hard working, and fun.

Company is growing extremely fast so there are lots of opportunities for professional development.

Office space is awesome (adjustable height desks!!) and there are great perks (free bootcamp & yoga classes, free lunch 2x/week, annual all company meeting, social events like trivia night).

    Cons

Fast growth so be prepared for constant change.

There are definitely opportunities for advancement but there isn't a clear path - you have to seek it out yourself.

There is so much to do - it can be hard to know when to stop!

    I worked at MongoDB

    Pros

    – Top industry talent.
    – Good pay.
    – Lots of interesting projects.
    – The company is experiencing tremendous growth.

    Cons

    – Fast growth may lead to restructuring.
    – There's also a lot of less interesting work to be done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really push the product to be everything it can be – I love using MongoDB, and it works well now, but everyone at the company knows there are many more improvements that need to be made.

Also, the higher executives should probably engage more with employees on an everyday level – execs can often be seen moving throughout the office without knowing many of their employees names or even saying hello. As the company grows, it becomes less feasible to know most people, but it didn't even seem like there was much effort to personally connect with employees. A nitpick, no doubt, but worth mentioning nonetheless.

    Pros

You work with extremely smart, talented, and extremely driven people. There isn't one person who works here that isn't 100% invested in the product and the success of the company. You will contribute on your first day.

    Cons

Like any successful company we are experiencing growing pains and need more office space!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the transparency from the top down.

    I worked at MongoDB

    Pros

There are many company benifits (paid lunches, "unlimited vacation days", lots of social events, etc).

The work at 10gen is interesting thanks to the very interesting technical directions the product has taken (mostly owing to the awesome work done by the CTO and the upper-level engineering management I think).

There are a lot of very smart engineering folks!

    Cons

The engineering team and the sales / marketing teams might as well be in different companies, which is odd for a company this size. Also, I personally found some members of the sales team a little unfriendly towards the engineering staff.

The pay is industry standard, which is OK... However, for a company with large amounts of funding in the bank (which is public knowledge FYI), I find it irksome that the compensation isn't a little more generous.

All around, this is an incredible place to work: there is a huge range of opportunities within each department, everyone is very intelligent and easy to work with, and the quality of the work is outstanding.

I have been working at MongoDB as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

10gen is not too big. As an intern we had lunch and question sessions with the founders and CEO. They gave us choices for our project and hooked us up with mentors. All of the projects were real work that is important to the company. Everyone is friendly, you can just go up and talk to them. They had intern events like movies, lazer tagging, etc. every week.

    Cons

Doesn't have the crazy perks like free cafeteria, hair cuts, busses, etc., that you get at big companies like Facebook or Google.
